The Rocky Mountain Cup is a contested soccer trophy between Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids. The Cup is awarded by Committee 10, a group of bi-partisan fans running the competition, to the team with the most points in the game being played in between. The team is awarded 3 points for each win and 1 point for each series in the regular MLS season games against each other. The trophies were awarded at the end of the game deciding the series between the two teams.
If the team ends the season with a draw, the team with the most goals in the aggregate will win (for a two-team competition, this is equivalent to goal difference). If teams are tied on aggregate goals, holders currently retain the Cup for another year.
The Cup was created in 2005, the first year of play for Real Salt Lake.

When it was officially announced that Salt Lake City would be awarded an MLS expansion club, fans from Utah and Colorado set up a bi-partisan Committee of 10 (5 supporters from each club) and began to outline the official rules of the competition. The contest was named Rocky Mountain Cup after voting from the fans, and trophies were obtained.
The Rocky Mountain Cup started on April 16, 2005 at Real Salt Lake home games, where Real grabbed their first win with a 1-0 win. Colorado finally won the trophy in 2005 after besting Real in the next three games of the season, formally winning the Cup at their last meeting of the year at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Prior to the 2006 MLS season, the two clubs swapped players in the trade, exchanging forward Jeff Cunningham and midfielder Clint Mathis. The impact of the trade came in an August 10 match in which RSL humiliated Colorado 4-1 at INVESCO Field, punctuated by a star performance by Cunningham where he earned two goals and one assist.
The Rapids will take their revenge that year during a very hot game in Salt Lake City on September 2nd. The affair saw many violent violations and seven yellow cards. Fans showered the field with debris and missiles throughout the game. Colorado will clinch a 1-0 win and secure the Rocky Mountain Cup for the second year in a row. The myriad of controversies erupted after the game when the Rapids celebrated with the trophy. Captain Rapids, Pablo Mastroeni took off his shirt, stuffed it into his shorts, and began to signal to Salt Lake fans. The RSL owner, Dave Checketts, then enters the field and confronts Mastroeni in an angry verbal encounter that is then solved by players and officials. Much to the anger of Real fans, the League does not take action for Mastroeni's controversial behavior.
The 2007 competition starts with the Rapids earning a comfortable 2-0 win on the road. After the game, Colorado midfielder Kyle Beckerman made a commentary on RSL supporters and their reaction to the controversy from the previous September: "It must be from their fans they run their mouths all over the game, if they do not want us to celebrate, win the game.
The next meeting between the teams, a 1-1 draw on May 10, finished with a strange difference being the only draw in MLS history where only goals were scored. Later that year, on July 16, the two clubs exchanged Kyle Beckerman and Mehdi Ballouchy. This trade proved highly controversial to support the Rapids and further deteriorated their relationship with Colorado head coach Fernando Clavijo.
Real Salt Lake will then even series the 2007 series in September, forcing the game to decide in Colorado a month later in the final game of the season. Both teams are all but mathematically ruled out of the MLS Playoff Cup, leaving the October 20 contest most of the match for pride. The Rapids needed only a draw to secure the cup for the third year, but Real grabbed the final win when Robbie Findley scored in the 87th minute. Victory for Real Salt Lake won their first Rocky Mountain Cup club, and also brought a painful end to one of Colorado's worst seasons.
2008 will play the same way as the previous year. The game decides again at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on the final day of the season. However, the stakes are higher, with victory for both sides ensuring a playoff spot along with Rocky Mountain Cup (Real can also win with a draw). Colorado drove and led 1-0 in the closing seconds of the game, but Yura Movsisyan scored a clutch-time halt to end the game with a 1-1 draw. The result is RSL's biggest moment in club history: retaining the Cup for the second year, earning their first place in the postseason, and refusing the Rapids from the playoffs at home. Salt Lake fans celebrated by throwing a number of smoke bombs into the field after the final whistle, adding insult to injury to shocked Colorado supporters.
The 2010 edition of Rocky Mountain Cup played as closely and attractively as the previous three seasons. In the first leg, held Sept. 27 at Rio Tinto RSL Stadium, Real Salt Lake fielded a largely reserve squad amidst a hectic schedule of their schedules including the CONCACAF Champions League group game 2010-11. Coach Jason Kreis rested most of the starter in anticipation of a chance to clinch a place in the CCL knockout round three days later. Conor Casey gave Colorado a 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute. The result looked like it would continue until former Rapids Rapids defender Nat Borchers headed in service from Andy Williams in the 93rd minute for a 1-1 draw. The second leg will end up in a more interesting way. The team returns to Dick's Sporting Goods Park for the regular season finals tie on 23 October. Both teams have already reached the playoff spot. RSL requires a win or a tie to have a chance of winning the Support Shield. Colorado appeared to destroy expectations with a 16th-minute goal by Omar Cummings and a 51st-minute header by Conor Casey. The Rapids fans are ready to celebrate their first Rocky Mountain Cup in 4 years while bringing a 2-0 lead in stoppage time. RSL striker Alvaro Saborio scored twice in extra-time - first on blocked clearance from Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens in the 91st minute, and second on penalty in the 95th minute after Drew Moor pulled RSL Jamison Olave defender down on the box at free RSL kick. A 2-2 draw gave RSL Rocky Mountain Cup for the fourth season in a row for being the winner of the previous year. Conditions after the game became ugly when some RSL players made obscene gestures toward the Colorado support terrace and were consequently bombarded with beer and other projectiles. The draw will prove to be beneficial for Colorado, as placing them in the Eastern Conference bracket is easier for the 2010 MLS Cup of Playoffs in which Colorado won its first MLS Cup.

By 2017, nine players have played for both teams in the Rocky Mountain Cup. It was mainly started by trading between two teams in 2007, where Colorado's Kyle Beckerman traded to Salt Lake for Mehdi Ballouchy, both of whom became regular contributors to their new club. Trade also deals with Salt Lake control over the Rocky Mountain Cup for years. In addition, Nat Borchers, Jeff Cunningham, Atiba Harris, Richie Kotschau, Clint Mathis, Chris Wingert, and Luis Gil also face both sides of the competition.

Committee 10, or C10, was originally formed through discussions between fans from Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids on BigSoccer.com and on the now-defunct fan forum at RealSaltLake.org. It was decided that each team fan would be represented by five people per side. This representative will be responsible for creating guidelines, designs, and ultimately raising funds to make the Rocky Mountain Cup.
