The Pontiac Silverdome (formerly known as Silverdome ) is a stadium in Pontiac, Michigan. It opened in 1975 and sits on 127 acres (51 ha) of land. When the stadium is opened, it displays the roof of fiberglass cloth that is lifted by air pressure, the first use of the technique at major athletic facilities. With a seating capacity of 82,000, it is the largest stadium in the National Football League (NFL) until FedExField (capacity 91,000) in suburban Washington, D.C., opened in 1997.
It was primarily the home of the Detroit Lions of the NFL from 1975 to 2001 and was also home to the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1978 to 1988. In addition, Silverdome also served as home to Detroit Express from the North American Football League and Michigan Panthers of the United States Football League, as well as two college bowl games: Cherry Bowl and Motor City Bowl. In 2012, Silverdome serves as the host of the Detroit Mechanix of the American Ultimate Disc League and hosts the league championship game of the season.
The stadium is a regular concert venue and hosts a number of athletic and non-athletic events, including the 1979 NBA All-Star Game, Super Bowl XVI, WrestleMania III, 1994 FIFA World Cup preliminary round games, and regional games at NCAA Division I Division Basketball Boys.
After the opening of Ford Field in 2002, the stadium was left without a permanent tenant. It first closed in 2006, but after several attempts to request a redevelopment plan, the city sold the stadium at auction in 2009 for only $ 550,000 (less than 1% of the cost to build the dome). It reopened in 2010 and hosted several events, but was closed again, this time permanently, in 2013. The roof was destroyed by a winter storm in 2013. The owner auctioned stadium content in 2014 without any future development until June 2015 In 2017, Silverdome is cursed and prepared to be destroyed; the top deck of the stadium exploded on December 4, 2017, after a failed attempt on the previous day.

Former using
The Silverdome hosted the Detroit Lions of the NFL (1975-2001), Detroit Pistons of the NBA (1978-1988), Detroit Express (for outdoor and indoor soccer) from NASL (1978-1980), Michigan Panthers from USFL (1983 -1984), Cherry Bowl (1984-1985), The Motor City Bowl (1997-2001), the final soccer state of MHSAA (1976-2004) and four first-round matches during 1994 football FIFA World Cup.
For World Cup matches, a natural grass surface capable of growing inside the dome was developed and installed by a team from Michigan State University. The surface of the grass is placed on a wooden pallet on the artificial grass that is usually used. This is the first time a World Cup game is played indoors. The Silverdome also hosted the 1979 NBA All-Star Game, Super Bowl XVI on January 24, 1982, and 1988 and 1991 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament Midwest Regionals and NCAA Men Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in 1982 and 1983.
On March 29, 1987, the WrestleMania III World Wrestle Federation set a attendance record of 93,173, the largest attendance record for indoor sports events in North America. The record stood until February 14, 2010 when the NBA All-Star Game 2010 broke the record of indoor sporting events with the presence of 108,713 at Cowboys Stadium.
The Silverdome held an AMA Supercross Championship round from 1976 to 2005.
In 2012, Silverdome became the home stadium of the city's professional Ultimate Frisbee team, Detroit Mechanix, from the American Ultimate Disc League. That year, Silverdome hosted the AUDL championship game, as on August 11th, the Philadelphia Spinners beat Indianapolis AlleyCats 29-22.
After the roof has collapsed and the stadium is abandoned, Red Bull produces BMX rider Tyler Fernengel video riding inside Silverdome in 2015. Some important tricks in the video are the Fernengel slab to double the pegs up to 180 ° spin on one hand in the stadium and the " truckdriver "(the rotating handlebars 360 à ° while the bike frame rotates 360 à °) out of the fancy box onto the path that leads to the field. In the same year, a drag racing event in a former parking lot marked the start of the Woodward Dream Cruise.

History
Conception/development
The idea of ââa major sports complex is part of Dream C. Don Davidson, a native athlete and high school star of Pontiac, Michigan. Davidson, after graduating from Pontiac High School in 1947 and completing an active duty with the US Marine Corps, attended North Carolina State University on a soccer scholarship. After earning his master's degree in city planning and architecture, Davidson began his career as an architect and was recognized for several government and city projects throughout the south including the Jacksonville Florida International Airport. He returned to Pontiac in 1965 and was surprised to see the decline of Pontiac city and the lack of future plans. Davidson started what would ultimately be an obsession for him to see his favorite city succeed. In 1965-1966, he was hired as professor of architecture and urban planning at the University of Detroit under the direction of Bruno Leon.
As part of a comprehensive and sustainable study by its architecture class on urban renewal for the city of Pontiac, Davidson met with city and state authorities including William Clay Ford, owner of the Detroit Lions, to discuss the possibility of a new stadium, made it a college-grade project to find a place which is suitable for the new stadium and even started his own weekly newspaper known as The Pontiac Times , to help promote his vision. After much controversy and debate with Detroit city officials, Pontiac was selected over several other sites including Michigan Fairgrounds, Walled Lake and Detroit Riverfront as the best place for the construction of what is known as Pontiac Silverdome. Already with the stadium concept as part of its master plan for the city, Davidson was interviewed and eventually hired as project chief projector for the stadium project by architectural firm O'Dell, Hewlett & amp; Luckenbach. The initial design included a double stadium complex for football and baseball (potentially becoming a Detroit Tigers venue) which was later removed due to high costs. Davidson was delighted to see some of his vision for the city of Pontiac was achieved in the construction of an 80,000-seat sports complex. Completed in 1975 as the Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium , at a cost of $ 55.7 million, Silverdome sits 80,311. It contains 102 luxury suites and 7,384 club seats.
Roof like original silver
The original silver-like roof is built from Teflon-coated fiberglass panels, and is supported by air pressure inside the stadium. Although the roof is always white as seen with the naked eye, the stadium gets the name "Silverdome" because of the reflection like silver caused by the Sun, especially visible from the sky. (Initially, however, the stadium also went with a short nickname PonMet, but the nickname was disliked by the Pontiac town commissioner.) The roof was replaced by a new canvas cloth, reinforced by steel blocks after a powerful snowstorm on the 4th March 1985, causing structural damage to the old roof. Due to the damage, the Detroit Pistons played the rest of the 1984-85 season at Joe Louis Arena which is now closed. The accident, and the delay in repair, partially pushed the Pistons to move three seasons later 4 miles (6 km) north into the new sports arena, privately owned, 20,000 seats, The Palace of Auburn Hills (like Joe Louis Arena, also since it was closed).
The 1985 repairs were demanded by the collapse of the original roof at around noon EST on March 4, 1985. Weight, wet snow accumulates in the southwest corner of the dome and presses the fabric panel low enough so that the fabric comes into contact with the catwalk steel lighting positioned just below the inner lip from the roof ring beam. The hole caused a loss of air pressure and the Dome deflated slowly - no injuries. The shift from the "dome" to the "bowl" caused all the snow to be thick and wet to slide into the bowl and break more roof panels, unload some rungs on the upper deck of SW, and throw more plastic chairs "... from the Rolling concert Stones "according to Bob Haney, Dome Operations Manager. The crew of Owens-Corning Fiberglas, the original dome roof installer, were at the location at 1:30 pm on March 4th. The repair operation started immediately but was disrupted for over a week due to high winds. During the event of strong winds almost all the remaining panels on the roof were deflated, 100 in all, badly damaged. Decisions are made to replace the entire roof and include some improvements to prevent similar events from occurring in the future. Roof repair costs just under $ 8 million.
The repair was completed and the dome re-inflated during the day on May 28, 1985. Thunderstorms passed through the Pontiac area in the morning. The dome would be reinfected and partial inflation, or "puff," was carried out so that scheduled inflation could occur in the presence of many city and regional politicians and company executives. Original Teflon-coated fiberglass materials are used to make improvements - not canvas as described in the article. There are some improvements that melt snow and waterproof that keep the dome up by January 2, 2013 - almost 28 years.
Attendance of a prominent attendance
The largest crowd ever gathered at Silverdome was on September 18, 1987 for a Mass with Pope John Paul II, with a reported presence of 93,682 - only overshadowing a record 93,173 sets at Silverdome on March 29, 1987 for WrestleMania III. The record of another notorious previous attendance was broken on April 30, 1977, when British rock band Led Zeppelin played in front of 76,229 fans at Silverdome. It was, at the time, the presence of a new world record for solo indoor attractions, defeating 75,962 that The Who was interested there on 6 December 1975. Detroit Pistons also arranged many records of NBA presence during their time at Silverdome; Regular Season, 61,983 vs. Boston, January 29, 1988; Playoff, 41.732, vs. LA. Lakers, June 16, 1988.
Marching band activities and events
The Silverdome also home to many events and activities of marching bands, including the Championship Band State Championship Compete State of Michigan By 2005 Championship Bands of America Regional from 2003 to 2005, and the Bands of America Grand National Championships in 1987 and 1988 after the resumption, Silverdome to host the South American Regional Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
The use after the Lions moved to Ford Field
The Lions moved to Ford Field at the start of the 2002 NFL season. When the World Hockey Association (WHA) tried to reintroduce itself, the new Detroit WHA team was scheduled to play its home game at Silverdome. The plan was also debated for the Windsor-based Canadian Football League team who could use the dome for possible playoff games, but the team also did not materialize.
After the Lions are relocated, activity at Silverdome drops dramatically; However, it still held several events. Every year, Jehovah's Witnesses use Silverdome from the late 1970s to 2004. Due to talk of renovation in 2004, Witnesses chose to go to the Dow Events Center in Saginaw, and the SeaGate Convention Center in Toledo, Ohio for their District Service. Between 2003 and 2006, a three-screen drive-screen theater was operated in the parking lot; the theater was reopened in 2010 before being closed back on July 13, 2011.
The Silverdome hosted Monster Jam on January 7, 2006, and was used as a training facility for the AFC Champions Pittsburgh Steelers for Super Bowl XL, with the NFL adding FieldTurf, which was then donated to the local high school.
Sales
After the departure of the Lion, the town of Pontiac began to experience several years of serious financial problems. Due to the continuous high maintenance costs of the structure, it made several unsuccessful attempts to sell the stadium. In early 2008, United Assurance Company Ltd. made the highest purchase offer to date, with an offer of $ 18 million to convert the Silverdome into a Hollywood-style entertainment complex, following an earlier $ 12 million offer by a lawyer. However, the city announced in October 2009 that the property will be auctioned off without a minimum bid, and that zoning rules will be relaxed for any buyers to trigger development. The city involves Williams & amp; Williams to auction in November 2009.
After reading about the auction in the newspaper, Canadian-born Canadian real estate developer Andreas Apostolopoulos, CEO of Triple Properties Inc. based in Toronto, proposed a winner of US $ 550,000. Real estate cost of 6% raised the price to US $ 583,000. The sale of Silverdome, completed in 1975 at a cost of $ 55.7 million (approximately $ 225 million in 2012 dollars) and sold in 2009 for $ 583,000, is seen by many as a symbol of a fall in real estate prices in the Detroit metropolitan area. Although many local leaders and residents claim the sale was due to the inability of city management and they have no vision or future plans for the stadium and the surrounding area.
Reopen (2010-2013)
In the March 11, 2010 edition of Detroit Free Press, Apostolopoulos vowed "to revive the stadium as a major event venue by investing millions of dollars".
The Silverdome reopened on April 17, 2010, with a monster truck event.
AIR CONDITIONING. Milan and Panathinaikos F.C. played an exhibition game on August 6, 2010. On January 29, 2011, professional boxer Timothy Bradley defended the WBO light-welterweight title in a unification bout against WBC champion Devon Alexander. The battle was aired live at the HBO World Championship Boxing, with an attendance of around 7,000. Owners indicate that they are pursuing a possible team expansion for Major League Soccer, and are contemplating renovating Silverdome for this purpose. In the end, the lack of events that go into the stadium, combined with the 2013 roof collapse, puts the development plan further indefinitely.
Content auction and unloading
In March 2014, the owners announced that they would auction off the contents of the facility, including chairs and fixtures. Thereafter, in October 2015, it was announced that Silverdome would be destroyed in Spring 2016, and the area would be part of mixed-use development in Oakland County, Michigan. Demolition is then scheduled for December 3, 2017. In June 2016, fires caused by arson destroyed the former press box. The parking lot is used as a storage area for hundreds of VW diesel cars. The owners of the dome and the city are in conflict over the condition of the dome.
In 2017, Silverdome is criticized and cleared for demolition. Workers have been on site for the last few months before the main power supply was decided to prepare Silverdome for demolition, including completing environmental improvements, universal waste removal and tearing transit asbestos panel used in most of the suites around the dome; though not without some local crossing visits to explore the place leading to the demolition. On September 18 and 19, 2017, four electrical decisions were decided, formally beginning the final preparation process for disassembly. The company was contracted to deal with demolition, Detroit-based Adamo Group, also paralyze Georgia Dome in Atlanta on November 20 before moving to Silverdome. Silverdome disassembly will begin on December 3, 2017 with a partial explosion of the upper deck, followed by excavation of the building from the inside out.
Due to cable problems, eight of the explosives failed to detonate, preventing the stadium from exploding as planned. The second attempt succeeded the next day. While Adamo was unable to find the exact cause of the problem, they noted that the intruder had been spotted on the property a few days before the first attempt. It is noted that at the second attempt, Adamo doubled the amount of explosives used from 300 to 600 pounds (136 to 272 kg) of TNT.
In March 2018, the last remaining wall of Silverdome has been cut down, leaving a 50-foot hole (15 m) where the stadium once stood. 55,000 cubic meters (42,050 m 3 ) of the crushed concrete will remain on site for use as a landfill material. The exterminator stated that the final filling and grading operation of the former Silverdome site is expected to be completed by the end of November 2018.
