History
The Giant Tire was first created as a Ferris wheel for the 1964 New York World Exhibition in Flushing, Queens, NY. Located on the Grand Central Parkway beside the Transport and Travel Pavilion and now part of the Queens Zoo, it was originally plastered "U S ROYAL TYRES". Designed by Shreve, Lamb & amp; Harmon, the same architectural company that designed the Empire State Building, the wheel carries more than 2 million people, including famous passengers like Jacqueline Kennedy, Telly Savalas and Shah Iran. It has a 24 barrel-shaped gondola, each carrying up to 4 people, and can carry up to 96 passengers. It's driven by a 100 hp engine.
When the fair ended in 1965, the tire was disassembled and shipped to Detroit via 22 trucks, where it was reassembled without its passenger gondola in 1966 as a static display outside the Uniroyal sales office. Later, the sales office moved but the tires remained, becoming an icon of Detroit's industrial strength. Today still stands tall as a symbol of the Uniroyal heritage and landmark of Detroit.
On May 20, 2015, Uniroyal held an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of tires for members of the Automotive Press Association and other guests, who toured the interior.
Remodeling
Michelin completed the purchase of Ban Uniroyal Goodrich Company in 1990, and in 1994 announced plans to renovate the landmarks, including new hubcaps and the addition of fluorescent lamps for UNIROYAL writing. Fiberglass tire covers are cleaned, painted, and modernized with a new slim look.
In 1998, a giant spike of 11 feet (3.4 m) weighed 250 pounds (110 kg). placed on his tread as a promotion for the new punta tire from Uniroyal NailGard. The nails were removed in 2003 and donated to the city of Allen Park, which will be auctioned on eBay to raise funds for programs and facilities from Allen Park Historical Society.
In 2003, Giant Tire was renovated as part of the I-94 corridor revitalization project in Detroit. Works worth US $ 1,000,000 including the replacement of 30 inner steel masts, the installation of bitumen and storm conduits, and the replacement of fluorescent letters with reflective letters.
