Ryde is a bus service that provides transportation to the Brigham Young University community (BYU) (including the Provo Missionary Training Center) in Provo, Utah, USA. This service is owned and operated by Student Movement, Inc. (SMI) and operates under the brand, "The Ryde". Although The Ryde started as a limited-service pay-service bus, but the fall of 2015 was extended to a limited service bus route free for BYU students.

Description

The purpose of Ryde's shuttle service is to help transport the "thousands" of BYU students between BYU's main campus and off-campus housing. While the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is the main provider of public transit services in Provo and along the Wasatch Front, the founders of The Ryde believe that UTA is inadequate in addressing these transportation needs. The growing success of The Ryde seems to support this assumption. Ryde provides (almost) direct transportation from most off-campus housing areas (and one on campus) to the BYU campus center (closer than the stop UTA).

Moto Ryde is BYU's Ultimate Flight Service and its website encourages students to "Stop overpaying for gas, scraping your frozen windshield and fighting for the parking lot!"

In addition to the weekday routine service, The Ryde also provides Saturday morning "Grocery Runs" that take passengers along regular routes, but instead of going to the BYU campus, they go to Macey's grocery store before giving the ride back about forty minutes later.. Student housing complexes on campus that do not include regular routes are also served by Grocery Runs.

Although The Ryde serves the BYU community, it is authorized to drive buses on BYU properties (for the exclusive purpose of taking and delivering official passengers), and SMI has (or has) a service contract with BYU and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints LDS), the SMI is not affiliated with BYU or the LDS Church; and neither BYU nor the LDS Church are interested in the SMI

Destination

The following residential areas and various other destinations are served by The Ryde:

Rates

In Fall Semester 2015 (August 2015) Ryde is free for all BYU students, faculty and other employees with their BYU ID. Before autumn 2015, students can purchase tickets for $ 99.00 per semester or $ 179.00 per school year (fall and winter semesters). In addition, some apartment complexes subsidize their citizens' permits so they can buy for $ 79.00 per semester. (For comparison, UTA costs $ 212.00 per semester, but that includes access to all UTA service areas along the Wasatch Front.)

History

Origins

At least since 2002, BYU provides students (and often faculty and other employees) opportunities for UTA buses that are subsidized for free or substantially subsidized from one form or another. However, in the fall of 2010, BYU announced that starting with the Fall 2011 Semester, it would dramatically reduce the amount allocated to subsidies through UTA. The result is that even with the nominal subsidy continued, there is a dramatic increase in the cost of graduating UTA for students.

In mid 2011, BYU announced that starting with the 2012 Winter Semester, Student Movement, Inc. (SMI) will start transporting students between certain off campus housing units and the BYU campus. SMI was founded earlier that year by two BYU seniors (Jake Luekenga and Kevin Smith) who believed there was a need for more specialized services than UTA provided. (While UTA passes access offered across the UTA service area, many students use it almost exclusively to travel to and from the BYU campus.) Although a genuine discussion with the BYU Administration has begun in March, it took until June to reach company agreement with BYU and has been signed. (A contract is required because the SMI will operate partially on the BYU private campus.) As soon as the agreement is executed, SMI orders three buses. The buses used by SMI are the same size as the 40 foot (12 m) bus used by UTA, but will use compressed natural gas (CNG) for fuel, rather than diesel (as used by most of them which are owned). by UTA at the time). Thus, Luekenga claims, their buses have 50 percent lower emissions. Another advantage of the new service (via the UTA route) is that the shuttles will connect directly to the BYU campus center.

Plans for the new shuttle include services to three areas: King Henry area (southeast of campus), Alpine Village and Glenwood area (northwest-northwest campus), and Raintree and Wyview Park area (northwest campus). The only stop on campus (as defined by BYU) was initially adjacent to the Art Museum. SMI also indicated that the plan included Saturday morning "grocery grocery". The fee for the new service is set at $ 99.00 per semester, but residents of the Glenwood and Raintree complex will get subsidized subsidies so that the cost will be $ 79.00 per semester. Even before the service started, SMI hopes to expand its services beyond the three destination areas, especially the Carriage Cove and Branbury regions.

More than a year after The Ryde started service, BYU announced that it would permanently close most of East Campus Drive and the eastern end of North Campus Drive. Although the closure will be phased out, the first phase will begin in May (after the end of the 2013 Winter Semester) and will include the closing of East Campus Drive between the 1100 North and Heritage Drive. As a result of this closure access to the Art Museum stop for the King Henry shuttle is no longer possible, so the campus stops at the location east of the Crabtree Technology Building on East Campus Drive (southeast of the Student Center Wilkinson). However, this same closure also moves the UTA stop/transfer location (UTA stop closest to the campus center) from the east of the Wilkinson Student Center (on East Campus Drive) to the campus perimeter at about 800 East 900 North. The end result of this change is that The Ryde can continue to take and lower students 1,000-1,500 feet (300-460 m) closer so that each UTA stops (depending on the direction of approach to campus).

In the fall of 2013, additional routes were added to serve a residential compound of married Wymount Terrace students on campus. In October 2013, The Digital Universe reported that missionaries on the west campus while the Missionary Training Center ("MTC West"), which opened in early 2013, used a limited shuttle service provided by the Student Movement The Ryde). Especially The Ryde carries missionaries between the main MTC campus, Provo Temple, and sometimes the Marriott Center. MTC terminated the use of the temporary western campus by the end of 2014.

Free service

In December 2014, BYU announces that starting with the 2015 Autumn Semester, most of Ryde's routes will be upgraded and will be free for all BYU students, faculty and other employees with their BYU ID. However, the shuttle route that previously ran to Wymount Terrace will be eliminated. Also included in the announcement, BYU pointed out that it will start charging students to park at most of the many on campus that have previously been free for students. BYU anticipates that a new $ 60.00 parking fee will cover the cost of the Ryde shuttle service. However, since The Ryde does not operate during spring and summer, parking in all student lots will remain free during that time of the year. BYU states that the change is intended to "give incentives" to students to use other transportation options other than their cars. The Ryde shuttle service eliminates the time many students spend parking and then walks to various parts of the campus.

Initial plans for free services include continuation of stops near The Lodges at Glenwood Apartments on Route 1. (The stops also serve Alpine Village, Cambridge Court Apartments, Sweetwood Tree Apartments, and Riviera Apartments). However, this dismissal was eventually derived from the route along with service to these complexes. The route that serves Wymount Terrace (which runs until 2014) also dropped from plans for The Ryde's free service (mainly due to the low number of passengers). However, some Wymount residents have petitioned to return the service. To support their application, students indicate that this route will also provide services for all students to the Student Health Center.

Route

In addition to the regular route, The Ryde also provides "Saturday Grocery Runs" for Macey's in northern Provo. Regular service (weekdays) is provided from around 7:30 am to about 9:00 pm Monday to Thursday and from about 7:30 am to about 6:00 pm on Fridays during autumn and winter term, but not on vacation school (when school is not in session). During peak hours (07: 00-10: 00 and 03: 00-18: 00) freight operates every 15 to 20 minutes. The Saturday "Grocery Runs" take (depending on destination) at 9:00 to 9:50 am and leave Macey at 9:50 to 10:40 am (again, depending on destination).
