The Salt Water Sports Athlete is a magazine on recreational sea fishing in the United States and around the world. Originally published in Boston, Massachusetts in 1939, Salt Water Sportsman evolved from its roots covering New England waters to tackle saltwater fisheries around the world. The magazine is based in Winter Park, Florida.
Glenn Law is the editor-in-chief of the magazine. Topics covered at Salt Water Sportsman include fishing techniques, knots, rods and reels, fishing rods, baits, rigs, boats and outboard motors and seas. The magazine also includes fishing spots throughout Florida, the Gulf Coast, Southeast, Northeast and the West Coast of the United States, Alaska and Hawaii, as well as the Bahamas, Mexico, South America, Australia and Africa. The magazine has published an article on how to catch certain types of fish, including dolphins (otherwise known as "dorado" or mahi-mahi), yellow fin tuna, snapper, and flounder fish.
In recent years, magazines have taken a stand on conservation issues such as commercial fishing, capture and release, mercury contamination and marine habitat degradation.
