Roseanne Cherrie Barr (born November 3, 1952) is an American actress, comedian, writer and producer of television. Barr started his career in stand-up comedy at the club before getting critical and popular acclaim on Roseanne television sitcom (1988-1997; 2018). She won an Emmy and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her work on the show.
Barr was born into a Jewish family living in Salt Lake City, Utah. He became a stand-up comedian in 1980. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he began appearing as a celebrity through his roles at Roseanne and other public performances. Barr sparked controversy while performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" in a national baseball game on July 25, 1990. After singing the national anthem in what was regarded as a disrespectful way, Barr grabbed his crotch and spat.
