Setting authority Edit

The Port Canaveral Authority was established in 1953 by the State Legislature and consists of the Board of Commissioners and the Executive Management Team. The Council establishes policies such as fiscal, regulatory, and operating, while the executive is responsible for administrative and operational duties. In October 2015 the council voted unanimously to end the embattled CEO of John Walsh. Walsh clashed with residents over a controversial plan to build a cargo train through federal government-run wildlife protection. Walsh attracted public anger after calling the opposite of his plan "Luddites" and "dog chasing a moving car." Walsh lied about the documentation of the United States Air Force, which deals with the construction of the Canaveral Rail through Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The five Board Commissioners were selected from the surrounding area by popular vote. They had to live in certain areas but were elected by voters in the five districts. The race is partisan.

  • District 1 (Kennedy Space Center/Titusville) - Jerry Allender
  • District 2 (Area between Titusville and Cocoa and western US 1) - John H. Evans
  • District 3 (Cocoa/Rockledge) - Wayne Justice
  • District 4 (East United States 1 and Cape Canaveral) - Robert "Bruce" Deardoff was appointed by Florida Governor Charlie Crist to fill vacant seats until elections were held in November 2010. Deardoff was sworn in on March 3, 2010.
  • District 5 (Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach) - Thomas Weinberg
The salary is $ 10,083,72 per year.

The Executive Management Team is headed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

By 2013, there are 233 staff members, 162 permanent employees, 71 part-time.

History Edit

A columnist classifies the history of the actual harbor into four eras, roughly aligning the requirements of several directors: 1) preliminary construction and operation of ports without clear separation from government and management 1947-2004, 2) expansion of port facilities. Ports became the second in the 2004-2013 worldwide shipping business, 3) political divisions between governance and management 2013-2016, 4) the modern era of 2016-present.

Artesia Edit

A post office in the area was built and registered in the US Post Office application as Artesia. and retained this name from 1893-1954; and then began working for Port Canaveral from 1954-1962.

Port dredging Edit

The idea of developing a port in this location was first compiled in the 1880s. The port was dredged between 1951 and 1955.

Dedication took place November 4, 1953, with the Navy destroyer escorting the USSÃ, McClelland (DE-750) participating. US Senator Spessard Holland is the keynote speaker.

Commercial fishing had begun at the port, and the following year commercial voyages began, with cement loads sent by SS MormacSpruce . In 1955, the Tropicana Corporation began building refrigerated warehouses to store orange juice, local agricultural products, before shipment.

The ship is American, with registration from Panama. The ship was burning in the sea between Miami and Nassau, Bahamas in 1965, and cruise ship traffic was limited until the 1980s.

In 1965, a dedicated key in the harbor, as part of the Canal Canal Canal. The Canaveral Key is still operating and managed by the United States Army Engineer Corps. The focus of the harbor during the 1960s and 1970s remained in the form of commercial and sailing fishing, with three 400 feet (120 meters) cargo docks built on the north side of Port in 1976, and a series of warehouses built in the harbor area.

Port Canaveral has played a role in supporting NASA projects from the nearest John F. Kennedy Space Center. During the Apollo program, the Saturn V transit segment transits through ports and keys. Recently the Space Shuttle external tank was flown to Port Canaveral for every mission, and solid rocket boosters pulled back through Port Canaveral after being taken from the Atlantic Ocean after each launch. NASA contributed $ 250,000 for key repairs in 1965.

In 2009, the last shipping company offering gambling, SunCruz Casinos, filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy (liquidation). The companies failed because of competition from land-based gambling activities at Seminole Casinos, and the Greyhound racecourse. The gambling layer reached a high of 1.0 million passengers in 2004, before it began to decline. Casino operations generate about $ 5- $ 6 million per year for ports.

In the early 1980s, a new port director, Charles Rowland, turned his focus towards developing the port to Cruise's port. In 1982, a warehouse of 20,000 square feet (2,000 m 2 ) on the north side of the port was transformed into Cruise Terminal 1. The SS Scandinavian Sea , a 10,427- ton vessel, is the first cruise to the home-port at Port Canaveral. The cruise ships early in the simple days sailed into the sea and back. The harbor then purchased two former Bicentennial exhibition buildings from NASA in 1983 and they became Terminals 2 and 3 in 1983. The next year SS Royale from Cruise Line Premier is a porta-house in Port Canaveral. The first 3 and 4 day cruises to the Bahamas begin. A fourth cruise terminal was built in 1986. The expansion into the West Lembah was started with the construction of Terminal 5. The celebration lasted for three days in early spring, and was jointly organized by the Cocoa Coastal Trade Chamber and the Canaveral Port Authority. It features live music, local artists, and seafood. In 2005, the final year of the festival at the harbor, 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) of freshly caught fish, including flounder fish, Florida crayfish, blue crab claws and 100 gallons of US (380Ã,Â,; 83Ã, c) seafood chowder is consumed at the festival. In 2006, due to security concerns and sites needed for cargo, the festival was forced to move elsewhere and renamed. In 2008 it tried to retreat but was canceled.

Twenty-first century Edit

Two cranes, 273 feet (83 m) tall, and a weight of 387,600 pounds (175,800 kg), are installed for use with cargo in 2014. This is used, costing $ 50,000 and in need of renovation.

In FY 2017-8, the port is estimated to be worth $ 100 million, and net $ 3 million. About 60% of revenue comes from shipping lines. The parking associated with the cruise ship is 18%. About 22% comes from cargo. Oil and related packaging products represent 43% of cargo.

Impact Edit

Ocean currents move sand along the coast in a natural process known as longshore drift. Because Port Canaveral interrupts the movement of this sand, every year about 200,000 cubic yards (150,000 m 3 ) sand accumulates on shore 1 to 2 miles (1.6 to 3.2 km) north of the harbor pier , and sand eroded from the coast 10 to 15 miles (16 to 24 km) south of the pier.

To counteract this effect the Canaveral Federal Sand Bypass Project transfers sand from the northern shoreline of the harbor entrance to the southern shoreline area of the entrance. This plan is implemented through the partnership of the Canaveral Port Authority, US Army Engineer Corps (Jacksonville District), and the State of Florida and Brevard.
