Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (IATA: AZA , ICAO: SOUL , FAA LID: IWA ), previous < b> Williams Gateway Airport (1994-2008) and Williams Air Force Base (1941-1993), is an international airport in the southeast of Mesa, Arizona, and 20 miles (17 nmi; 32Ã , Km) southeast of Phoenix, in Maricopa County, Arizona. The airport is owned and operated by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, and is a relief airport for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This is the base for Allegiant Air. The airport authority is governed by a six-member board: the mayor and tribal town governor of Gilbert, the city of Mesa, the town of Queen Creek, the Gila River Indian Community, the city of Phoenix, and the city of Apache Junction.

The FAA Integrated International Airport System plan for 2007-2011 calls the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway as a release airport , which is a common aviation airport used to reduce congestion at major airports. Allegiant Air started a scheduled service from Mesa in October 2007. Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport account says the airport has 1,242,237 boarding passengers (or approximately 621,000 enplanements ) in calendar year 2014.

Most US airports use the same three-letter location identifier for FAA and IATA, but Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has different codes for each. The aviation community generally uses FAA IWA codes, while commercial aviation airlines use IATA codes from AZA.

History

The airport was built in 1941 as Higley Field; it was renamed to Williams Field on 24 February 1942 in honor of the original Arizona Lt. Charles Linton Williams (1898-1927), while serving with the 19th Pursuit Squad of Wheeler Field, Oahu was killed when he had to dispose of Boeing PW-9A, 26-353, in the Pacific Ocean about a mile from Fort DeRussy, Territory of Hawaii. Then in 1948, this field was acquired by the United States military and renamed Williams Air Base in January 1948. It was a field of aviation training during World War II.

In 1948 Williams became the first jet training base, and in 1966, this was the first place of the Undergraduate Pilot Training program (UPT).

The Basic Settlement and Closing Commission of 1991 recommended the closure of the base because the operating costs were too high; the base was closed in 1993.

When the base was closed, it was decided that, with growing traffic at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport, an alternative airport would be needed. The runway was expanded to accommodate aircraft and facilities opened in 1994 as Williams Gateway Airport. The offer starts for some airlines to start the flight immediately.

In 2004 charter airline Ryan International Airlines embarked on an MD-82 flight to Bullhead City International Airport in Bullhead City, Arizona, next to Laughlin, Nevada and many resorts.

In recent years, the airport has again become an aviation training center. Some major flight schools now take advantage of weather flying in the Phoenix valley.

On July 31, 2007, the low-cost carrier Las Vegas, Allegiant Air, announced plans to open a focus city at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, connecting the Phoenix area to 13 cities. The service began on 25 October 2007, with cities added until 21 November 2007.

In a press release on September 17, 2007, the Gateway Government Authority Board of Governors approved a name change for the Williams Gateway Airport effective October 15, 2007 to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

On June 16, 2015, after Elite Airways announced a non-stop flight from San Diego and Salt Lake City to Phoenix-Mesa, Allegiant threatened to leave the airport. This is mainly due to the incentives that the airport offers to Elite. If Allegiant leaves, he will consider moving to the nearby Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

On January 21, 2017, Phoenix-Mesa welcomed its first international flight and the first two international destinations, as Westjet inaugurated seasonal services to Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Westjet has seen success at Phoenix Sky Harbor over the years, with Calgary and Edmonton becoming the first and sixth most popular international destinations on Sky Harbor, respectively.

Board of directors

In 1994, Gateway Willams Airport Authority was established with a three-member board with representatives from three cities directly adjacent to Williams Field. The original government council consisted of the mayors of Gilbert city, Mesa city, and the town of Queen Creek, which continues as a member today.

In subsequent years, the Gila River Indian Community and Phoenix City joined the Williams Gateway Airport Authority Board (now Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport Authority). Gila River Indian Community joined in 1995 and Phoenix City joined in 2006. The city of Apache Junction joins in 2013.

Now that a change of name of the Williams Gateway Airport to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has taken place, the board approves the resolution and ordinance of not altering, reducing, giving, abolishing or reducing the board of directors and city, city or tribal government and individual ownership rights. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is continuously owned and operated by the Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport Authority.

The six-member Board of Directors consists of elected officials from neighboring cities and tribal governments. Community authority is in 2014:

  • Gilbert
  • Gila River Indian Community
  • Mesa
  • Queen Creek
  • Phoenix
  • Apache Junction

Future plans

One of the biggest problems in the IWA is the increase in passengers since Allegiant Air began operations. IWA does not anticipate this growth in the first year. Due to the increase from 14,588 enplanement in 2007 to 159,481 in 2008, the facilities became crowded. To address this problem, extensive renovations and expansions have been completed, adding nearly 70,000 square feet of new space inside the terminal. It added eight gateways since IWA was founded in 1994. The airport suffered damage to the final expansion plan in early 2013, to improve the tenth gate. However, the IWA has run out of real estate on the west side of the airfield, which will stop the expansion until the eastern terminal facility is completed.

Eastern Side Terminal plan

Responding to expansion issues, PMGAA has begun planning a new east terminal. The plan, entitled, Gateway 2030, was developed in June 2012. The Gateway 2030 Plan outlines the process, key findings and recommendations related to a reasonable cost-management approach for the development of approximately 700 acres of airport properties and critical City infrastructure to ensure its success "(IWA , 2012b) The plan will be implemented in 4 phases With the completion of the first phase, IWA will be able to accommodate 1.5 million enplanements (3 million passengers). The majority of phase one will discuss much-needed access and infrastructure to access new terminals, including access roads, parking lots, taxiways, apron capable of Group III and IV aircraft, and a new 300,000 square foot dock terminal. The new terminal will have 14 gates, built in such a way as to make room for 12 Group III planes and two Group IV planes.

Phase two has not been planned in detail, but will add another dock terminal to the main concourse, adding up to six gates, parking for 10,500 vehicles and an extension of 1,000 ft RW 12L/30R. Phase two will create the ability for IWA to handle 2.2 million enplanements. The third stage for the initial plan of Gateway 2030 will add another dock terminal and second tier to the main concourse and will create eight additional gates, new apron, more parking and additional taxiways.

The third phase will focus on the personal retail, office, and hotel building that will be located at the airport property. The third stage will allow the IWA to accommodate 5 million enplanements.

Phase four will complete the 2030 plan, enabling IWA to handle 10 million enplanements (20 million passengers) annually with a total of 60 gates and 21,000 parking spaces. Stage four is unlikely to be done until 2030 or later, making cost estimates almost impossible.

As markets change, phases two, three and four tend to change. Gateway 2030 is estimated to cost more than $ 1.4 billion.
