Histori
The first University of Utah librarian was appointed in 1850, the same year the school was founded. President John R. Park University opened a library and reading room filled with his personal collection of books lent to the university in 1874. The library moved to LeRoy Cowles Building in 1900 and George Thomas Library Building in 1935, both in Presidents Circle. The current five-storey building opened in 1968 and was named J. Willard Marriott in 1969 when he donated $ 1 million to the library collection, the largest single contribution ever received by the university at the time.
The library expanded 210,000 square feet (20,000 m 2 ) in 1996, which is almost double the size of the library, and expanded again during major renovations between 2005 and 2009. The purpose of this renovation is to improve seismic stability buildings, provide clearer paths through buildings, improve environmental control, and allow more natural light. Additional additions are also made to the building including automatic storage and retrieval systems that can store up to 2 million items, larger computer labs, additional classrooms and teaching labs, new indoor cafes, rooftop gardens and additional study areas including the Grand George S Reading Room Eccles.
