In the United Kingdom, he received 789,000 viewers for the premiere (and 1.2 million viewers overall during the first week), making it the second most-watched program for the Disney Channel (UK) of 2006. On December 29, 2006, it became the first DCOM which was broadcast on the BBC. Globally, High School Musical has been viewed by more than 225 million viewers.

With a plot depicted by the author and many critics as a modern adaptation of Romeo & amp; Juliet , High School Music is a story about two junior high school from a rival gang - Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), basketball team captain, and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), a shy student who good at math and science. Together, they try for the main part in their middle school musicals, and this causes a split among all the school students. Despite the efforts of other students to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella reject the pressure and rivalry of their peers, inspiring others along the way not to "stick to the status quo". The high school division, Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) and her twin brother, Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), will do nothing not only to sabotage the friendship and romance between Troy and Gabriella but also to gain clues in school musicals.

High School Musical was filmed at East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, Murray High School auditorium, and Downtown Salt Lake City. Murray High School is also a set of several other Disney productions: Take Down (1979), Read This and Cry (2006), Minutemen (2008 ), and High School Musical: Get in Picture (2008). In January 2016, cast of Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman reunited in a Los Angeles high school building (decorated to resemble a gym building used in films) to celebrate the film's tenth anniversary. Zac Efron was not able to attend but sent a short video of him that gave recognition to the cast, crew, and fans of the film.

Plot

On New Year's Eve, junior high school Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) meet at a party while the two teenagers are at the ski lodge during the winter break. At the party, both are called to sing karaoke together ("Start of Something New"). They find that they have connections and decide to exchange numbers before parting.

On the first day back to school after Christmas break, Troy sees Gabriella in her classroom and explains that she just moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and moved to East High School during the break. Troy then shows Gabriella around the school. President of the Drama Club, Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) arrives and assumes that Gabriella is interested in auditioning. Wanting to eliminate the competition, Sharpay investigates a new girl and has a scholastic decathlon captain and Chem Club president, Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman), finds out about Gabriella's past academic achievements, which earned her and Gabriella a good friend.

During basketball practice, Troy has trouble focusing because his mind is in Gabriella and the idea that he might enjoy singing other than basketball ("Get'cha Head in the Game"). Gabriella and Troy go to a music audition where Sharpay and her twin brother Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel) perform ("What I've Been Looking For"), but Troy and Gabriella are both too shy to audition. When Gabriella finally gained the confidence to move forward after an unofficial "over" audition, Troy offered to sing with him, but drama teacher Ms Darbus (Alyson Reed) told them that they were late and left. Kelsi Nielsen (Olesya Rulin), the music composer, travels and drops his music to the whole stage. Troy and Gabriella hastily helped him, and they sang together as Kelsi played the piano ("What I've Been Looking For (Reprise)"). Ms. Darbus overhears them and gives them a callback audition.

When the callback list is posted, Sharpay discovers that he has competition to lead in the musical, and the rest of the Wildcats are surprised that Troy has auditioned. Other students recognize their own secret passion and talent ("Stay at Status Quo"), worrying about Taylor and Troy's friend, Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu). Because Gabriella has agreed to join a scholastic decathlon team, both Taylor and Chad want their teammates to focus on their upcoming competition rather than musical. In the locker room, Troy is tricked by his teammates to say that Gabriella did not matter as he watched through a videoconference that the scholastic decathlon team had set up via a hidden webcam in conspiracy with the basketball players. Gabriella became very disappointed with her betrayal ("When There Was Me and You") and decided not to audition for the musical.

Troy is left wondering why Gabriella does not want to audition anymore and can not concentrate on the game. Gabriella also looks low spirited. Realizing their mistake, Chad and the basketball team told Troy what was happening and offered to support him in a callback. Troy goes to Gabriella's house and they make peace.

After hearing Gabriella and Troy practice, Sharpay has Ms Darbus changing the callback time to coincide with both basketball championship and scholastic decatlon to annoy Gabriella and Troy's participation. Kelsi did not hear the conversation and the basketball team and decathlon team worked together to make plans. On the day of the competition, Taylor and Gabriella use school computers to delay championship and decathlon matches, disrupting the power in the gym and causing chemical reactions that force evacuation. Troy and Gabriella rush to the auditorium while Sharpay and Ryan finish their callback song ("Bop to the Top"), confident that their plan works. After Gabriella and Troy audition ("Breaking Free"), Ms Darbus gave two main roles, making Sharpay and Ryan a substitute.

Both teams won their respective competitions and the whole school gathered in the gym to celebrate ("We All In This Together"). Chad asks Taylor to come out, and Sharpay makes peace with Gabriella.

Soundtrack was released on January 10, 2006, and debuted at number 133 on Billboards 200, selling 7,469 copies in its first week. In the third week of the album, for the February 11, 2006 chart, it climbed to number ten, and has since climbed to number one on Billboard 200 twice (on March 1 and 22) and has sent 3.8 million copies on December 5, 2006 Of the copies, more than 3 million copies were sold in August 2006; it was certified platinum fourfold by the RIAA.
