Electrochlorination is the process of producing hypochlorite by running electricity through the brine. It is used to disinfect water and make it safe for human use, such as for drinking water or swimming pools.

Process

The process involved in electrochlorination is actually rather simple. The main idea involved is water electrolysis to produce a chlorinated solution. This occurs when salt water is fed to the electrolytic cell. The first step is to remove the solid excess from salt water. Furthermore, since salt water runs it flows through channels of thickness degradation. One side of the channel is the cathode, the other is the anode. When water flows through the anode/cathode channel, a low-voltage DC current is applied. When this happens, electrolysis is triggered and direct sodium hypochlorite is produced as well as hydrogen gas (H 2 ). Hydrogen-rich sodium hypochlorite then moves to a tank that removes hydrogen gas. The dehydrogenation mechanism varies from device to device but the process is generally the same. After the hydrogen is removed from the solution, hydrogen is stored in the tank as the finished product. No chemicals other than common salt, or sodium chloride (NaCl), are used throughout the whole process. Although actual chemical processes involved are complicated, they can easily be represented by the following equation:

  NaCl   H  2  O   ENERGY   ->   NaOCl   H  2

In these words it says: energy is added to sodium chloride (table salt) in water, producing sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen gas.

Sea Water

Sometimes, companies will want to use seawater for this process because the cost of obtaining is very low. The seawater used is usually brackish water or salt water (ie a solution with & gt; salinity of 0.5%). In this case, random chemicals can be incorporated into the system. These random chemicals pose no threat to the system, however, due to the simplicity of the process. The low-voltage DC current applied will only do what it is meant to do, ie electrochlorination. Excessive random chemicals are untouched and can be removed easily.

Products

The product of this process, sodium hypochlorite, contains 0.7% to 1% chlorine. Anything under 1% chlorine concentration is considered a harmless chemical although it is still a very effective disinfectant. In addition, sodium hypochlorite is generated in the pH range of 6-7.5. This means that the chemical is relatively neutral in terms of acidity or humiliation. Also, in the pH range, sodium hypochlorite is very stable and electrochlorination is very effective.

Drinking Water

Local water treatment plants have begun to develop their technology over the years as health threats from water contamination become more common, including cholera, typhoid and dysentery. to combat this threat, the water treatment plant starts to apply chlorination. Chlorination almost eradicated the spread and initial contamination of the disease, and did so in a way that earned him the title of "Millennium Life's most significant public health advancement" from Life Magazine.

Electrochlorination is the next step in the evolution of this process. Electrochlorinated chlorine is drinking water and doing it in an environmentally friendly way. It does not harm the environment in a measurably negative way. Unlike other chlorination techniques, electrochlorination does not produce sludge or by-products. It is also safer for operators of chlorinators because there is no handling of chlorine gas, which is highly toxic and corrosive.

Swimming Pool

When a swimmer enters the pond, they add up to a billion organisms to the water. Chlorination kills all organisms that are harmful to swimmers as it causes ear infections and athlete's feet. The advantages of electrochlorination in this process are as follows:

  • Does not irritate the skin or soft tissues.
  • Active in small concentrations.
  • Age is longer than chemistry and therefore less replacement is required.
  • Easy to measure.
