These salts are found in mineral springs, which, since the Roman Empire, have been used as health spas, where people will go to bathe, and drink, mineral-rich water for their health. This development led to efforts to replicate the salt mix found in these natural mineral waters by using materials outside the shelf. Mixing the types of salts - especially carbonates and tartrates - with flavorings such as lemons into frothy compounds with citric acid or tartaric proved to be very popular and sparked insanity for the new "salt fruit".
