Uyuni (Aymara, uyu pen, page, graveyard, -ni suffix to show ownership, "one who has got a pen" , "with pen") is a town in southwestern Bolivia. There is only a small amount of farm in the area because the supply of water is scarce and somewhat salty.

Uyuni mainly serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the largest salt plains in the world, the nearby Uyuni salt plains. Each year the city receives about 60,000 visitors from all over the world. The city also acts as a gateway for trade and traffic that crosses into and out of Bolivia from and to Chile, and there is a customs and immigration center in the city center.

Founded in 1890 as a trading post, the city has a population of 10,460 (official 2012 estimates). The city has a wide street market. It lies on the edge of a vast plain at an altitude of 3,700 m (12,139 ft) above sea level, with more mountainous states to the east.

Funeral train

One of the main sights in this area is the antique rail funeral. Located 3 km outside Uyuni and connected to the old railway line. The former city served as a distribution center for trains carrying minerals on their way to the ports of the Pacific Ocean. The railway line was built by British engineers who arrived near the end of the 19th century and formed a sizable community in Uyuni. Engineers were invited by the UK-sponsored Antofagasta and Bolivia Railway Company, now Ferrocarril de Antofagasta, Bolivia. Rail construction began in 1888 and ended in 1892. This was driven by then Bolivian President Aniceto Arce, who believed Bolivia would flourish with a good transportation system, but it was also continuously sabotaged by local natives who saw it as a disturbance into their lives. Trains are mostly used by mining companies. In the 1940s, the mining industry collapsed, partly due to mineral depletion. Many trains were abandoned so as to produce a rail funeral. There is talk to build a museum outside the cemetery.
