The Salton Sink is a geographical sink inside Salton Trough in the valley of Coachella and Imperial California southeast. It is in the subregion of Colorado Desert Sonora Ecoregion Desert. Drainage to the endorheic sink is collected in the Salton Sea, which occupies the lowest area of ââthe sink.

Geology
Salton Sink is a low topographical area within Salton Trough, an active tectonic basin. The Salton Trench is the result of a crustal crust and is submerged by the combined action of the San Andreas Fault and the East Pacific Rise. The Brawley seismic zone forms the southeastern end of the basin and connects the San Andreas Fault system with the Imperial Damage Zone to the south. The Salton Buttes is a lololite lava dome in an active basin of 10,300 (Ã, à ± 1000) years BP.

History
A large lake, Lake Cahuilla, was in the area from about 20,500 to 3,000 years ago and leaves evidence as a bench that cuts off waves in the higher parts of Salton Buttes. The coastline describes the ancient Cahuilla shoreline where archaeologists found traps of rock fish and charred remains from razorbacks and horseshoe bones. High water channels show the basin has been filled many times, creating a lake with a length of 105 miles (170 km) and a depth of nearly 300 feet (100 m). His most recent incarnation is evidenced by a fish trap found about 30 feet (10 m) below a high water mark that is estimated to be between 300 and 1,000 years old.
Recently, the flood waters of the Colorado River in 1862 reached Salton Sink, filled it and created a lake 60 miles (95 km) long and 30 miles wide (50 km) wide. In 1884 and 1891 the Colorado River had streams to Salton Sink. The 1891 Flood created a lake covering an area of ââ30 miles (50 km) and a width of 10 miles (15 km). The larger Colorado flood of 1905 fled to the diversion canal, forming the Alamo and the New River and creating the current Salton Sea in the Coachella Valley at the sink. The 1907 dam prevents flooding, but leaks still occur in the Salton Sea.
