History

Formation and growth

The first Red Lobster restaurant opened on January 18, 1968, in Lakeland, Florida, by businessmen Bill Darden and Charley Woodsby. The frequently quoted date of March 1968 was based on March 27, 1968, the merger of Red Lobster Inns of America, Inc. (now GMRI, Inc.) at the Florida State Secretary's Office. Originally billed as "Harbor for Seafood Lovers", the first restaurant was followed by four other restaurants throughout the southeastern United States. In 1970, General Mills acquired Red Lobster as a five-unit company. With new support, the chain expanded rapidly in the 1980s.

Red Lobsters entered Canada in the 1980s, in many cases by purchasing the Ponderosa restaurant location. The company generally maintains between 25 and 30 locations in Canada, mostly in larger urban centers in Ontario (in southern Ontario plus one in Sudbury in northern Ontario) with smaller numbers in larger urban centers in the three Prairie provinces. It came out of the Quebec market in September 1997 due to financial losses, and never attempted to enter the market in British Columbia.

On March 29, 1994, Bill Darden died, after an extended illness, at the age of 75.

In 1995, Red Lobster (along with Olive Garden and other sister chains), became part of Darden Restaurants, Inc. During that time, General Mills decided to free Darden into a publicly traded independent company.

New prototype and sales

In 2009, Red Lobster debuted with a prototype of the new "Bar Harbor" restaurant that was modeled after the coast of New England. New exterior features include shingle and stone tower, signal flag, and Adirondack style benches. Interior updates include dark wood paneling, warm fabrics, soft lighting, and nautical decoration and artwork.

On December 19, 2013, Darden Restaurants announced plans to sell or spin-off the Red Lobster brand, citing pressure from stock investors. This is a direct response to Darden who will receive too much funding on a new digital platform. On May 12, 2014, Darden announced that as part of the Red Lobster spin-off, it changed the location of Red Lobster and Olive Garden into a joint location to a stand-alone Olive Garden location. On May 16, 2014, Darden announced it would sell its Red Lobster seafood restaurant chain to Golden Gate Capital for US $ 2.1 billion. Darden announces the completion of the Red Lobster sale on July 28, 2014.

On August 6, 2014, Red Lobster announced the location of their new headquarters at the CNL Center City Commons in Orlando. On March 6, 2015, Red Lobster officially opened the Restaurant Support Center.

Promotions

Red Lobster has been offering the promotion of endless snow foot crabs twice in its history. However, in 2003, promotion resulted in the parent company Darden Restaurants taking a $ 3 million fee for third quarter earnings, resulting in the departure of Edna Morris president of the company. Inappropriate promotions are launched amid high wholesale crab foot prices. The chain also underestimates how many times customers will order more. A more complicated problem at the restaurant level is the amount of time customers spend on the table side at crab legs cracking restaurants. This results in increased waiting time in the lobby and reduced customer capacity per hour overall.

In February 2016, American singer Beyoncà ©  © Red Lobster referenced in a single "Formation". After unexpectedly releasing the single and performing it during the 50-minute Super Bowl show, Red Lobster reported a 33% increase in sales due to the reference.
