Academic Performance
For the 2015/2016 academic year Paradigm is awarded one of the lowest grades in Utah for academic performance based primarily on its SAGE test score. The Utah State Board of Education gives Paradigm High School an F grade (based on 38% proficiency on the SAGE test) for its performance in the 2015-2016 school year. Based on this ranking, Paradigm High School is defeated by every public high school in the state of Utah. In fact, Paradigm High School lost to all schools of any kind in the entire state of Utah except for one charter school, however, this is almost entirely based on SAGE testing. By accident, at a 54% dropout rate, Paradigm also has one of the highest opt-out rates for SAGE testing in the state.
As an alternative to SAGE, Paradigm uses ACT for internal performance tracking. The School has been managing ACT for all SMA grades twice per year for 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 school year. During those years, ACT student removal rates were below 5% and the average ACT score was equal to or slightly better than the state average.
Ethnic diversity
In the 2015-2016 school year, Paradigm High is one of the most diverse schools in Utah. Only one high school out of 20 public high schools in Salt Lake County (Riverton High) has less ethnic diversity. Riverton High is in the same neighborhood as Paradigm. Paradigm High has 516 white students out of a total of 587 enrolled students, which means 88% white, compared to 91% whites in South Jordan, the city is located on
Course
The paradigm offers a variety of courses in addition to standard courses, such as Novel Writing, Environmental Science AP, and taekwondo. Among the various courses of English is one of the writings of C.S. Lewis, and classes on Western and Eastern, French, Gothic, and English literature (including Shakespeare). It also offers Latin, ASL, German, Spanish and French.
Leadership
Unique to Paradigm High School is a class called Leadership, which is offered in three levels: Foundation, Transition, and Bachelor Degree. The focus varies at every level:
- Foundation is a course rooted in the fundamentals of education Paradigm: study habits, goal setting, personal accountability, self-reflection, and the basics of group discussion and joint investigation, and introduction to books, people and ideas. This is for students who have just started their journey towards self-education.
- The transition is a course that is indeed a transition; geared towards students who have embarked along a graduate path, the goal of the course is to provide practical experience in Paradigm models, while helping students to develop their own individual sense of mission.
- Scholar is the most advanced leadership course: great literature studies and great ideas, and practical applications. This is the preparation for furthering the education and experience of students outside the Paradigm.
The course is now integrated into the Seminar Course, which is a blend of English, Leadership, Classical History based that meets in a double block class.
Athletics
As a small liberal arts college, Paradigm is not a member of UHSAA and therefore does not participate in high school athletic programs. Students may choose to participate in local high school athletic programs while attending Paradigm to get the best of both worlds.
The paradigm supports strong intramural sports programs, with basketball teams receiving second place (girls) and first place (boys), and women's volleyball team winning second place.
Paradigm offers Standard PE classes as well as Dance and TaeKwonDo.
Extracurricular activities
The paradigm has many extracurricular activities and a competitive team. The Paradigm Chess Team (PCT) occupies the third position in the 1A-3A division at the Utah High School Chess Championship two years in a row.
The paradigm also supports the excellent Academic Decathlon team. In March 2011, they defeated the state champion Park City High in Super Quiz, one of 10 categories, and the most competitive, with 5 points out of a possible 6,000.
New in 2011-2012 is a mock test team. Their first competition is February 24, 2012 against Mountain View High School. More recently, in 2016, the Mock Trial team advanced past the first round of competition and competed again a few weeks later.
