Histori
Some of the earliest places in England in Calcutta are located in the area later known as Dalhousie Square. Terretti and Lalbazar nearby are the usual shopping spots of British people. Then settlement appeared in Kashaitola, Dharmatala and Chowringhee. In the 1850s, British colonists continued to sway in Calcutta and showed contempt for "natives" and a reluctance to brush their shoulders with them in the bazaar. In 1871, moved by criticism masterminded by the citizens of England, a committee of Calcutta Corporation began to contemplate a market that would belong to the British citizens of Calcutta. Driven by the committee's consideration, the Corporations purchased Lindsay Street, making plans to tear down the old Fenwick Bazar that was there, and commissioned Richard Roskell Bayne, an architect of the East India Railway Company, to design the Victorian Gothic market complex will replace it. It began to form in 1873, and Bayne was honored for his achievements with Rs. 1,000 rupee award, large amount in the 1870s. Mackintosh Burn is the builder.
The gigantic shopping center opened to the British population with excitement on January 1, 1874. News of Calcutta's first market town spread rapidly. The prosperous colonists from all over India shop at exclusive retailers such as Ranken and Company (clothing makers), Cuthbertson and Harper (shoe merchants) and R.W. Newman or Thacker Spink, a well-known stationary and bookseller.
Sir Stuart Hogg, then Chairman of Calcutta Corporation, has shown strong support for New Market building plans. Thus, 28 years later, on December 2, 1903, the market was officially named Sir Stuart Hogg Market and then shortened to Hogg Market. The Bengali community, in the English era, called it Hogg Shaheber Bajaar, a name still in use, like Sir Stuart Hogg's paintings still hanging in the Calcutta Corporation portrait gallery. But the earliest provisional nickname, New Market, which remains in use all the time, proves to have the most power sticking out.
New Market Growth kept pace with the city until World War II. The northern part of the market appeared in 1909 at a cost of 6 lakh rupees. Despite the storms of World War II, extensions were engineered on the south side, and the historic clock tower at the south end of the market was shipped from Huddersfield and installed in the 1930s. The flower shop is located near the front entrance, and the kiosk that sells fresh and preserved food is placed at the back of the market. Outside of the vegetable stalls, butchers and butchers run their trade, and, until the mid-1970s, at the very back of the market, exotic animals from across the United Kingdom can be bought as pets.
