- This is about the legacy of Flying J Inc., which continues to operate as FJ Management Inc. For current trucking chains, see Pilot Flying J.
FJ Management Inc. , formerly known as Flying J Inc. , is a privately owned US company that operates department stores, oil & amp; refining, banking and insurance business. Together with Pilot Corporation and Berkshire Hathaway, it is the joint owner of Fly Pilot J, the largest truck stop chain in the United States.
The company was founded in 1968 by O. Jay Call and is headquartered in Ogden, Utah. Lifetime aviation enthusiasts, Call named it Fly J in honor of the aviation industry. Mr. Call, his wife, Irene, and Richard "Buzz" Germer died while testing the Cessna Citation on their way to Sun Valley in March 2003.
He sought Chapter 11 (reorganized) bankruptcy protection in December 2008, blaming his financial difficulties on the collapse of oil prices and tighter credit markets. Pre-bankruptcy, Flying J is the largest solar retailer in North America with approximately 220 locations in the United States and Canada and 15,000 employees. The company produces and refines petroleum products to stop its truck. The company also offers vehicle maintenance, banking, insurance and telecommunications services for the trucking industry, and a number of on-site restaurants.
The company had sales of $ 18.0 billion in 2008, but noted crude oil prices and falling demand for gas-eroded margins and affect cash flows.
The company is ranked 13th in the 2009 Forbes list of the largest private company in the US. Revenue in 2008 was about $ 18.00 billion. Flying J was quoted by the Terrorist-Free Oil Initiative as a company that does not buy oil from countries that sponsor terrorism. Company plans for the travel plaza sometimes get opposed from locals who are concerned about traffic safety and other issues. In 2006 Flying J linked with Shell Canada to improve Canada's road service.

Merge of pilot
In July 2009, Pilot Travel Centers agreed to get a Flying J trip stop. As part of the deal, Pilots will keep the Flying J name in an existing location instead of turning it into a Pilot brand, while the Flying J restaurant at home will be replaced by a national chain like Denny's. The combined entity will be called the Flying J Pilot.
In June 2010, Flying J filed a Chapter 11 plan to repay all lenders entirely from the sale of its 250 plaza trip to the Pilot, for a combined $ 1.6 billion cash and stocks combination. Under the Flying J plan, its lenders and creditors will be paid in cash, and the owner, whose numbers include the founding family members of the company, will retain all equity in Flying J. In July 2010, the hearing on his plan continues under Judge Mary F. Walrath from the US Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware. Oil & amp; Flying A refining, banking, & amp; the insurance business will remain separate from the combined Pilot Flying J. To avoid confusion with the combined travel center business, Flying J Inc. change its own name FJ Management Inc. . Since the merger, Flying J Pilot continues to open a new location under the name Flying J (other than the name of the Pilot), carrying a location with the Flying J brand that has no relationship to the existing Flying J before the merger.
To solve the antitrust problem, six Flying J locations and 20 Pilot locations were sold to Love's Travel Stops & amp; Country Stores on June 30, 2010.
On October 3, 2017, it was announced that Berkshire Hathaway will acquire a 38.6% stake in Pilot Flying J, with plans to increase ownership to 80% by 2023. Haslam family ownership will be reduced to 20% by then, while FJ Management will sell the entire shares.
