Although the LDS Church officially maintains a policy of neutrality in terms of political parties, church doctrine has a strong regional influence on politics. Other doctrinal effects can be seen at the high utah birth rate (25 percent higher than the national average, highest for US states). The Mormons in Utah tend to have a conservative view when it comes to most political issues and the majority of Utahns voters of ages are unaffiliated voters (60%) who voted highly Republican. John McCain surveyed 62.5% in the 2008 Presidential Election while 70.9% of Utahn chose George W. Bush in 2004. Culture
Recently, Utah has experienced migration of the population from other US countries that serves to change the country's sociocultural/political character. The percentage of Mormon's Utah population has declined while the number of non-believers has increased.
Southwestern Utah aka "Dixie Utah" does not have much cultural similarity to the Southeastern United States. The name came from a resettlement drive sent in the 1850s to advertise the warm desert climate found in Washington County.
Warm and temperate climates in Iron, Juab, Millard, Sanpete and Washington districts recorded population growth rates from the 1980s to early 2010s.
The state witnessed several real divisions and sects of Mormonism: Bickertonites, Church of Christ and ex-Mormons; and fundamentalist FLDS commanders in rural communities such as Hildale in southern Utah and nearby towns of Colorado City, Arizona and Fredonia, Arizona adjacent to the Arizona Line on the state border with Arizona.
There is also a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender active community that thrives in the Salt Lake metropolitan area. The LGBT magazine national The Advocate rated Salt Lake City as one of 50 state hotspots for subculture in 2005.
Utah has a high total birth rate, and the youngest population in any U.S. state. It is also one of the few non-Southern countries that have more men than women.
In 2000, 49.9% of women and 50.1% of men were Utah gender groups.
