Description and history

The Barlett-Hawkes Farm is located in a residential area west of the center of Waban village, on the west side of Winnetaska Road at the intersection with Quidnic Road. This is a 2-1/2 floor wooden frame structure, eight wide bays, with side sidewall and board siding. The rear roof extends to the first floor, giving the house a saltbox profile. There are two entrances on the main facade, each two bays from the side. Both have a Federal period that surrounds it with pilasters and an entablature corned; which on the left also has a half-length sidelight window.

The oldest part of the house is believed to be the three southernmost bays, built as "half-houses" around 1736 by Ebenezer Bartlett, which has about 100 hectares (40 ha) of land. Bartlett and his wife Anne raise seventeen children in the house, expanding it to five bays. Bartlett's son, Elisha, increased agriculture to 200 acres (81 ha), and served in local militias during the American Revolutionary War. His son Peregrine sold his farm to George Hawkes, another local farmer, in the mid-19th century. Then the owner further expanded the building in the early 20th century, adding a bay on the north side and adding a barn salt shed to the rear. Originally facing nearby Beacon Street, the house was moved about 200 feet (61 m) to its present location in 1915.
