Careers
Philanthropy
Johnson was involved in a full-time charity organization in the 1980s. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Her family has been affected by lupus and juvenile diabetes, which motivates Johnson to take a role in raising funds to prevent, treat, and cure autoimmune diseases. He has led efforts at Capitol Hill and at the National Institutes of Health to increase research funding for the disease, and personally contributed to diabetes-related causes, after his daughter, Casey, was diagnosed with the disease. He started a research foundation, Alliance for Lupus Research, after his daughter Jaime was found to be suffering from lupus.
Sports
On January 18, 2000, Johnson bought the Jets for $ 635 million, the third highest price for professional sports teams and the highest for one in New York. Johnson, who also has field-side seats to the New York Knicks, defeated the $ 612 million offered by Charles Dolan, Cablevision chairman, who owns Madison Square Garden, Knicks, and Rangers. The team sells for more than $ 100 million above what some sports finance analysts expect.
After purchasing the Jets, Johnson announced plans to move them to the proposed West Side Stadium in Manhattan. However, after the project's defeat in 2005, Johnson announced the Jets would move to the new Meadowlands Stadium as partners aligned with the Giants. The new stadium opened on April 10, 2010, with naming rights acquired by MetLife. Johnson served on the NFL Commissioner's search committee where a list of 185 candidates to replace Paul Tagliabue narrowed down to Roger Goodell's final choice.
Personal effort and legal issues
Johnson was chairman and chief executive of Johnson Company, Inc., a private investment firm established in 1978. In August 2006, Johnson was asked to testify before the Senate's Permanent Investigative Subcommittee on his participation in the tax evasion scheme. A Senate report said that Johnson, along with others, can buy, at a relatively small cost, a capital loss of about $ 2 billion they use to erase the taxable profits they get from the sale of shares. The US Treasury lost about $ 300 million as a result. In a statement, Johnson said he had been advised by his lawyer in 2000 that the transaction was "consistent with the Tax Code." After the Internal Revenue Service opposed that view in 2003, Johnson in 2006 agreed with the IRS and agreed to pay 100 percent tax plus interest.
Johnson is the chair of the Pre-Commissioning Unit committee for San Antonio USS class New York .
