History
The earliest known inhabitants of the western Salt Lake Valley are the indigenous tribes of Ute and Shoshoni.
The first European to live in that area was the Latter-day Saint (Mormon). The European-Americans arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The area was first spied by settlers Joseph Harker and his family in the area they named as "above Jordan" (referring to the land west of the Jordan River, which flows through valley).
The Granger area was completed by the Welsh Latter-day Saints who came to Utah with Dan Jones in 1849. Irrigation and agricultural systems were developed in the area, and Elias Smith proposed the name of the area for farming success. At other times the high alkali content makes agriculture difficult, but there are enough Latter-day Saints to form a separate Granger Ward in 1884. Granger and its surroundings had about 1,000 people in 1930.
Hunter was not completed until 1876. The settlement was started by Rasmus Nielsen, Edward Rushton, August Larsen and about seven other people along with their families. Irrigation began in 1881 and its main plant was a fruit tree.
The city began to experience rapid growth in the 1970s, when the present area of ââthe Western City Valley comprised four separate Hunter, Granger, Chesterfield, and Redwood communities. These four unrelated regions merged in 1980 to form the city of today. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, West Valley City was the official venue for ice hockey for men and women.
On May 19, 2011, the city announced an official plan to create a downtown area for the city for 10 years, building on existing plans and developments. It will be known as Fairbourne Station (named Joseph Fairbourne, the early settler who operated the weigh stations in the area at the end of the 19th century) and will consist of about 40 acres (16 ha), for $ 500 million to build. The center will include a citizenship center (consisting of city hall, courthouse, police headquarters, and library), an eight-level Embassy Suites hotel, a plaza and a housing development, and the end of the TRAX Green Line, and a stop on the 3500 fast transit line South MAX bus. Valley Fair Mall and Maverik Center are located nearby, such as I-215. By 2016 its development is incomplete, with TRAX lines opened in 2011 and hotels by 2012, but City Hall and government centers are under construction.
Ted Bundy's serial killer was arrested in Granger on 16 August 1975, at a regular traffic stop.
