Route description
The route starts at the SR-48 intersection at the western end of the West Jordan countryside, near Copperton. It continues north as a two-lane road and the northwest curve passes through the intersection with 7800 South. The highway widened into four lanes as the 5400 West ended up on the road. Then 5400 West, SR-111 turned north and passes through the ghost town of Bacchus, where there is currently an industrial presence. SR-111 continues into Magna and cuts its way through the city center before ending in SR-201, a freeway/highway connecting the area's western suburbs with Salt Lake City.
Between junction 5400 South and 4100 South, brake check area is provided for traffic north.

History
The state legislature created State Route 111 in 1931, marching west from SR-71 in Draper to SR-68 in Riverton. State Route 159 , added in 1933, continued west from Riverton via Herriman to Lark and then turned north along the foothills of Oquirrh to the 50 US Route (US-50), the current SR-171 (3500 South), near Magna. Both routes were combined as SR-111 in 1945, and in 1957 the eastern end was extended to the north along the 700 East, which had become SR-71, to 7700 South north of Sandy, only to be trimmed back to Draper in 1959 when SR -71 re-restored there. In 1962, the northern terminal of SR-111 expanded slightly northward from 3500 South (at that time SR-171) to US-50 Alternate (now SR-201). The last change was a major cut in 1969, moving the southern end of SR-111 to its present location at SR-48 near Copperton. The old SR-111 portion of SR-68 at Riverton to SR-71 in Draper becomes an extension of SR-71, but the rest is removed from the state highway system.
