1973

In June 1973, Leutwiler used a professional 35 mm system to photograph his first sailboat race, Marblehead, Massachusetts to Halifax, Nova Scotia race. He later stated "quality is a disaster by my standards today", but as a result of this race, Deadelus Photography was born (the name changed to Leutwiler Photography in 1979). Leutwiler quickly realized that 35 mm would not produce enough images for professional enlargement, and immediately made a permanent transition to the Hasselblad camera. He slowly began to find his market, selling his photographs mainly to sailboat owners, crew members, boat producers, sailing magazines, and calendars published by magazines. In a 1987 interview with St. Louis Post Dispatch , he compared his niche to "selling paper clips to General Motors".

1976

In the Miami-Nassua Race of the 1976 SORC, Leutwiler photographed the Love Machine, which many seafarers felt was the best action photo of the period. It emerged as the cover of Yacht Racing Magazine in April 1976, and played an important role in establishing the Leutwiler brand name recognition. Wham Bam, Sunset, Tweety, Lonely Sea, and Condor were also published around this time and all became the cornerstone of Leutwiler photography.

1978

In 1978, about 1000 Leutwiler photos have been published nationwide in various advertisements, brochures, and ship exhibits. In the fall of 1978, the first edition of the many editions of Shooting The Breeze bulletin was circulated to its growing customer list. This newsletter immediately began incorporating elements of mild humor that would become Leutwiler's trademark.

1980 - 1981

In the Spring 1980 edition of Shooting The Breeze , Leutwiler announced "Here we are in the spring of 1980 and I think I will tell you about my first full Leutwiler calendar for 1981. We have selected 13 from my best and current photographs in production. The quality of the printing will be amazing and I feel it will be the best sailing calendar for 1981. "The 1981 calendar sold out, kicking very successfully for a decade.

1982 - 1990

The 1980s were the peak years for Leutwiler Photography, as the annual calendar became a larger principal of the world of sailboats every year, and the classic and new portraits continued to be successful. But after nearly twenty years of hard work and dedication, Leutwiler lost his passion and encouragement for ship sail photography and closed down his business in 1990, selling negative equipment and his camera. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in the early 1990s and pursued various other interests including real estate ventures. In 1993, he died in Salt Lake City.

Besides photographing the show, in 1983 Tom teamed up with television producer Stephen H. Schwartz to create "SORC: 983" a six-race documentary video on the Southern Ocean Racing Conference. The film is sponsored by SEBAGO and sold in the new popular VHS and BETAMAX format. The documentary is narrated by Gary Jobson.
