Name
Title Real > [re'al] ) is a Spanish word meaning 'kingdom' in English. The term is commonly used by Spanish clubs who have received royal protection from the ruling Spanish king, most notably of whom include Real Madrid, Real Betis and Real Sociedad. In choosing the name Real, Dave Checketts owners are meant to create a brand name that will become famous for its simplicity, as well as relationships with world famous clubs in Madrid that the club has been trying against. One of the reasons for using Real is the admiration of Dave Checketts' founder for Real Madrid during his time as general manager of the Utah Jazz National Basketball Association franchise. Checketts also found that pushing Real Madrid has a basketball team as well.
The local reaction to the new team's name was initially filled with mixed feelings. On top of that, some people think that the name sounds contrived, and does not really reflect the Salt Lake area, with the names of other teams like "Highlanders", "Salt Lake SC", or "Union SLC" being preferred. However, at least in 2014, the reaction to that name has improved, with the team establishing its identity as a Salt Lake representative.

History
Beginning of the year (2005-2006)
Real Salt Lake became the twelfth MLS franchise when Major League Soccer won an expansion franchise on July 14, 2004, to SCP Worldwide, led by Dave Checketts. Jason Kreis became the first player in RSL history, coming in trade from Burn Dallas. Other notable players who played in RSL's early years included veterans Clint Mathis, Eddie Pope and Jeff Cunningham.
RSL's first season was 2005 under head coach John Ellinger. RSL began playing on April 2, 2005 against the New York MetroStars at Giants Stadium, which ended in a goalless tie. The following week, Jason Kreis scored the first goal in franchise history in a 3-1 defeat to LA Galaxy at Home Depot Center. RSL played its first home game on April 16, 2005, before 25,287 fans at the Rice-Eccles Stadium; Brian Dunseth scored a header in the 81st minute to deliver a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids. This season was largely disappointing, however, with the team setting a league record with a 557 minute goalless streak post (later broken off by Toronto FC). They also are in a 10-game losing streak before setting up a 2-2 draw on the road against San Jose Earthquakes. The first season finished with a 5-22-5 record.
In 2006, Real Salt Lake's second season, the team recorded five losses and one bundle in its first six games of the season. RSL had 18 games in a row without a win - the longest winless streak in MLS history. Jeff Cunningham, who came to Salt Lake from Colorado, gave most of Real's spotlight during a bad 2006 season. The team failed to qualify for the playoffs, ending with a 10-13-9 record.
MLS and CONCACAF Success (2009-2012)
In the 2009 MLS season, RSL proved almost unbeatable at home, having a 9-1-5 record at Rio Tinto Stadium, with a record 23 goal difference. Real Salt Lake have not lost a league game at home since May 2009. However, the team struggled to maintain form during a road game. In the final weeks of the regular season, RSL found itself in the battle for the last two places in the MLS playoffs. However, thanks to victory over Colorado in the last game of the regular season, RSL grabbed the position in the 2009 MLS playoff. Despite completing the overall losing record (11-12-7), the team was awarded last place through a tie-breaker. Real Salt Lake went on to win the 2009 MLS Cup by beating the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Nov. 22 final. RSL plays L.A. Galaxy to a 1-1 tie through extra time and win the MLS Cup (5-4 on penalties). Goalkeeper Nick Rimando is named Man of the Match. Victory in the 2009 MLS Cup qualifying RSL for 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League.
The 2010 season saw RSL continue its unbeaten streak at home. On October 16, 2010 Real Salt Lake improved their unbeaten streak to 25 games after beating FC Dallas. This victory gave Real Salt Lake the most consecutive game without losing in MLS history. RSL tied San Jose Earthquakes 2005 record for an unbeaten home streak with zero losses in the regular 2010 season. Real Salt Lake came second in the race for Supporters Shield with a record (15-4-11). Goalkeeper Nick Rimando leads the league with 14 shutouts, and JÃÆ'ámison Olave is named MLS Defender of the Year. In the MLS playoff, however, RSL lost to FC Dallas in the first half.
For the CONCACAF Champions League 2010-11, Real Salt Lake is placed in Group A alongside Cruz Azul of Mexico, Toronto FC from Canada and Arabe Unido of Panama. Real Salt Lake finished first in Group A, with a perfect home 3-0 record and a 1-1-1 record. RSL continued its operations in the preliminary round of the CONCACAF Champions League 2010-11 in spring 2011. In the quarterfinals, Real Salt Lake progressed by beating the Columbus Crew 4-1 for two games. In the semi-final, Real Salt Lake beat Saprissa 2-0 in the home leg, before losing the away leg 1-2. The 3-2 aggregate is enough for Real to progress and become the first MLS team to reach the CONCACAF Champions League final. Real Salt Lake plays the first leg of the final on Mexican side Monterrey. RSL Javier Morales scored in the 89th minute, ending the game in a 2-2 draw. The second leg of the final was held on April 27, 2011, at Rio Tinto Stadium; Monterrey scored the only goal of the match, giving Monterrey a 3-2 aggregate victory.
In their 2011 MLS season, RSL's unbeaten home streak ended in 29 games on 28 May 2011, with their losses to Seattle Sounders FC. Real finished the regular season with a 15-11-8 record and finished third in the Western Conference. In the MLS playoffs, RSL beat Seattle Sounders 3-2 on aggregate. In the final conference, RSL lost 3-1 to LA Galaxy and eliminated. RSL qualified for the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League, as LA has won the MLS Cup and Supporter 'Shield, and RSL has the next best record.
In 2012, Real took second place at the Western Conference during the regular season. In the playoffs, RSL lost to Seattle in the conference semifinals, and were eliminated from the playoffs. In the CONCACAF Champions League 2012-13, RSL was placed in Group 2 with Herediano of Costa Rica and Tauro from Panama, but was eliminated in the group stage.
New ownership and management (2013-present)
In 2013, Checketts sold its stake in Real Salt Lake to minority owner Dell Loy Hansen. Prior to this season, the club also traded key players JÃÆ'ámison Olave, FabiÃÆ'án EspÃÆ'ndola and Will Johnson. RSL finished the season in second place in the Western Conference with a 16-10-8 (W-L-T) record, and reached the Open Cup final and MLS, each losing to D.C. United and Sporting Kansas City.
After the season, Kreis left Real Salt Lake to become the head coach of the first expansion club of New York City FC, with longtime assistant coach Jeff Cassar replacing him at the helm. Despite the departure, the club finished the 2014 season in third place in the Western Conference, with a record of 15-8-11 with a total of 56 points, and qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions League 2015-16. In the MLS Cup Playoffs, RSL was eliminated in the conference semifinals by eventual champions LA Galaxy 5-0 in aggregate.
Despite five matches unbeaten from the 2015 season, the team finally started to struggle in the standings, plus a defeat to Sporting Kansas City in the 2015 Open Cup final. RSL also lost key players Nat Borchers, who they traded to Portland Timbers before the season and scorer throughout the lifetime of ÃÆ' lvaro SaborÃÆ'o, traded away to DC United mid-season. Despite season-ending players, Luis Silva and Juan Manuel Martinez gave a strong performance, the team did not qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
The 2016 season begins with the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals 2015-16 where they are knocked out by second-tier UANL champions from the MX League with a 3-1 aggregate score. The 2016 season saw Real Salt Lake return to the playoffs but they were once again knocked out by LA Galaxy, this time with a 3-1 score on the road in the Western Conference game in the game. In the off season, old legends Javier Morales and Jamison Olave do not have an option made by the club.
On March 20, 2017 the club announced that Head Coach Jeff Cassar had been dismissed from his job only three games this season. Daryl Shore was named head coach for two games against New York Red Bulls and Minnesota United. On March 29 it was announced that Mike Petke would take over the position of head coach after the game against Minnesota United on 1 April.

Stadium
In 2005 a football-approved stadium was approved for Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. However, the 2006 polls weighed on funding proposals. Dave Checketts says that he will sell it if the proposal is not submitted. Parties from several cities, including Rochester, New York and St. Louis. Louis, Missouri, expressed interest in buying a franchise and moving it.
Finally, after months of discussion, a deal was made and Real Salt Lake announced that it would move forward with the construction of Real Salt Lake Stadium. The Salt Lake County Debt Review Committee, voted against the stadium. In response, Real Salt Lake owners announced the team would be sold and likely to move from the Salt Lake area after the 2007 season. However, a new stadium proposal was passed by the State Senate. The Utah House approved the House Bill 1SHB38, approving $ 35 million for the development of Real Salt Lake's new home. The governor signed the bill.
The $ 110 million stadium was built at Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. The stadium is named after its sponsor, Rio Tinto Group. The opening date of the stadium is set for October 9, 2008.

Club culture
Rivalry
Real Salt Lake's main rival is the Colorado Rapids, with both teams being the closest to each other geographically, and also competing for the annual Rocky Mountain Cup. The first competition started when Salt Lake went into Major League Soccer in 2005, with the trophy itself awarded by a bi-partisan "Committee of 10", consisting of fans from each club. Although dominated by the Rapids since its inception, Salt Lake has since led the series 7-3 over their rivals, and cup holders today, having won it during the 2014 season.
The team also maintained a smaller rivalry, fueled by fans with both Los Angeles Galaxy, which they defeated in the 2009 MLS Cup final and became the second winners for MLS Supporters Shield 2010, as well as Sporting Kansas City, which they beat in the 2013 MLS Cup.
Support group
Real Salt Lake has seven official support groups: The Loyalists, Rogue Cavaliers Brigade (RCB), Salt City United (SCU), Section 26, La Barra Real, The Royal Pride (TRP), and The Royal Army. Except for Section 26 and Royal Army (scattered throughout the stadium), all support groups sit in the southern stands.
Leo the Lion is the official mascot of Real Salt Lake.
Club Songs
In 2011, Branden Steineckert, drummer for punk band Rancid and Real Salt Lake supporters, composed the song "Believe" in honor of the club. Originally posted on YouTube, the song has been adopted as the team's official song, sung at the start of every home game, as well as after all goals scored by RSL.
Revenue and profitability
Since Real Salt Lake is a small market team, one of the team's biggest challenges is generating enough revenue to stay competitive. The opening of Rio Tinto Stadium in October 2008 provided a significant revenue increase for the team. Real Salt Lake goes from 4,000 season ticket holders before October 2008, to 8,750 in 2012, and passes 10,000 by 2013.
Sponsor
RSL has a multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with LifeVantage. It previously had a multimillion-dollar deal with XanGo a nutritional supplement company based in Utah, to bring XanGo's logo on the front of the RSL jersey from 2007 to 2014. Additional sponsors include JetBlue Airways and Maverik, Inc.
Broadcasting
Radio broadcasts are broadcast on KALL AM 700 (UK) and KTUB AM 1600 (Spain).
In the 2015 season, Sinclair Broadcast Group holds the television rights for Real Salt Lake games that are not broadcast by Major League Soccer national television partners. This show displays pre and post-match coverage. The Utah Sinclair KUTV and KMYU Utah stations serve as the team's main station, and television broadcasts are syndicated to other Sinclair stations in the area, and non-Sinclair stations in Albuquerque, Phoenix, and Tucson. In 2018, the team expanded its television deal with Sinclair, and announced a streaming partnership with KSL-TV, where it will offer streaming in the RSL regional broadcast market, as well as the Utah Royals FC and Real Monarchs games, on a digital platform.

The team started playing at the Western Conference of United Soccer League during the 2015 season, playing their home game at Rio Tinto Stadium along with their parent team. Starting in 2018, Kings will move to Zions Bank Stadium, a 5,000 seat capacity facility located at RSL's new training center in Herriman.
The women's soccer team, called Real Salt Lake Women, was founded in 2008. The team is currently a member of the Women's Football League Division, second-tier women's football in the United States and Canada, and plays home games at Ute Field, on campus University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Real Salt Lake added a second women's team, this one in the top National Women's Football League, in November 2017. The team effectively replaced FC Kansas City in NWSL, as FC Kansas City soon folded and all of its player contracts were assigned to the RSL franchise new. Shortly thereafter, a new team, which will share the Rio Tinto Stadium, was introduced as Utah Royals FC.
