Lake Martin is located in Tallapoosa, Elmore and Coosa County in Alabama. It is a reservoir of 44,000 acres (178Ã, kmÃ,ò) with over 750 miles (1,200 km) of forested coastline. Lake Martin is a reservoir, formed by the construction of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River. Martin Dam's power plant is used to generate hydroelectric power for the Alabama Power Company. The construction at Martin Dam began in 1923 and was completed in 1926, creating what was by then the world's largest man-made water body. Originally known as Cherokee Bluffs for geologic formations built, the dam was renamed in 1936 in honor of Thomas Martin, president of the Alabama Power company. Alabama Power and Russel Lands have the majority of coastlines.

Tourism â ⬠<â ⬠Edit
One of the largest manmade lakes in the United States, Lake Martin is a popular recreational area for swimming, boating, water skiing, camping, and playing golf. The Dixie Sailing Club operates on Lake Martin. Many seaside neighborhoods and mansions are located on Lake Martin. The cities of Alexander City, Dadeville, Jacksons Gap, and Eclectic are nearby.
Lake Martin hosts many events throughout the year, including fishing tournaments, fireworks performances at Fourth of July and Alexander City Jazz Festival, annual events every June in downtown Alexander City and at Lake Martin Amphitheater. Since 2009, the lake has hosted the annual AquaPalooza.
Lake Martin includes many popular attractions, including eagles nests, sand beaches, restaurants, camping areas and popular islands. The lake has several landmarks, such as the Kowaliga Bridge, and several marinas, but perhaps the most recognizable landmark on the lake is Chimney Rock, a large rock formation that resembles a chimney. Chimney Rock is located a few hundred yards away; the formation most people call Chimney Rock is Acapulco Rock. The area was the ravine of the Tallapoosa River before Martin Dam was built, and the water was over 150 feet (46 m) deep. This place is visited by thousands of sailors each year, who park in front of "The Rock" to watch people climb 60 feet (18 m) and jump into the water. In July 2006, a teenager died after his jump from a rock.
Lake Martin has been a weekend getaway for many families from all over the South. Many exclusive multi-million dollar dwellings are located on the lake; among the most famous are Richard M. Scrushy, founder and former chairman and CEO of HealthSouth Corporation located in the Willow Point area of ââParker Creek. Built in 1998, together with guests/boathouse, the residence contains over 15,000 square feet (1,400 m 2 ). HealthSouth purchased the house at the end of 2009 for $ 7.4 million as part of a $ 2.8 billion civil judgment against Scrushy for his fraudulent practices at HealthSouth from 1997 to 2003. Many other CEOs from Birmingham and Atlanta have homes on the lake.
Alabama has a lake of the same name, Logan Martin Lake on the Coosa River, but Lake Martin and Logan Martin Lake are not part of the same river system.

Island on Lake Martin Edit
Little islands is a popular spot on Lake Martin:
- Chimney Rock Island - Chimney Rock Island has long been a landmark in Lake Martin. Its name comes from a tall rock resembling a chimney that stands out from above the island.
- Acapulco Rock Island - Pulau Batu Acapulco is adjacent to Chimney Rock Island in the Tallapoosa River Valley. Often misconstrued as Chimney Rock.
- Doctor's Island - Named so because a group of doctors use the island as a base camp for fishing.
- Goat Island - Kambing Island is north of Martin Dam. It has become a home for goat families.
- Graveyard Island - A small cemetery in the area before the construction of Martin Dam is located on a small island on Lake Martin. About 30 times 30 yards (27 m) around, it's in the Bay Pine area.
- Real Island â â¬
- Sand Island - Pulau Pasir is a small island located between Willow Point and Kowaliga Marina. Over the years erosion has taken its toll on the island, but the rocks have recently been placed around the island to prevent it from being washed away. Boats often park on shallow sandy beaches. This is probably the smallest island on the lake.
Young Island Young (Young ferry) is here and destroyed by fire in the early 1990s. The foundation remains and there is a historic marker for the graves of the family children. - Weed Hill Island - Weed Hill is a small island almost directly across the street from the Pleasure Point Marina boat. Although at one time much larger, erosion has reduced the land.
- Wooden Island - Pulau Wood is a larger island, connected to land by a land bridge at low water time. It has several trails for hiking. It can be found at the end of Young Rd Ferry on the west side of the lake.
- Wilmarth Island - only the island is inhabited on the lake. Lake Martin tornado Edit
