Jackson Flat Reservoir

In 2010, construction began in the Jackson Datar Reservoir under the direction of Kane County Water Conservation District. The reservoir has been in various stages of planning for 19 years. The completion of the reservoir takes 2 years of development, and one year of filling. The dam structure consists of 800,000 meters of clay, soil, and rock. The project is overseen by four engineering companies including Utah State Engineer of Dam Safety, and the Army Corps of Engineers. The 4,228 acre-foot reservoir is an off-stream site provided by a 24-inch pipeline capable of transferring 23 acres of feet of water per day. The average depth of the reservoir is 28 feet with a conservation pool that will sustain 400 feet of water. In April 2015, the reservoir reached 3,000 acres of water. Water volume varies throughout the year because the reserves are tapped during the summer to supplement local irrigation needs, and are then replenished during the winter based on annual precipitation. This reservoir is located just south of Kanab, east of the city airport and visible from Highway 89A.

During planning and construction, the crew found 10 sites of prehistoric Anasazi ruins, including human remains. Sites that are under water lines are fully excavated and still delivered to local Paiute tribes for proper care and burial ceremonies. Sites above the projected water line remain unexplored.

The Jackson Flat Reservoir has been filled with trout, catfish, and bluegill fish varieties. The site supports boats without motors, fishing and swimming.

Natural Family Resolutions

On January 10, 2006, Mayor Kim Lawson and city council unanimously passed Resolution 1-1-06R , entitled Natural Family: A Vision for Kanab City :

"On the fifth anniversary of the Sutherland Institute, it says that 'important words' must be followed by deeds, and you must be ready to communicate them clearly, plainly, simply, and with unrelenting repetition , today there is a big wave coming towards us in all directions, the most serious is the natural family pollution as the basic unit of society, it has been determined that the natural family produces healthier, happier, more productive, and more adults engaged in society and healthier, happier, safer, and more educated children. We dream of a local culture that upholds marriage between a woman and a man, and a man with a woman, as ordained by God, affirms marriage as the best way to health, safety, satisfaction, and happiness. It makes homes built on marriage as a source of sovereignty the right olitik and the freedom that is commanded. We imagine parents as their children's first educators. "

The non-binding resolution was formulated by the Sutherland Institute, a conservative advocacy group from Salt Lake City. The symbolic resolution creates controversy within the city. Hundreds of tourists canceled trips to Kanab after learning about the resolution.

In Arthur Frommer's monthly travel column, Frommer called the city "homophobic" and urged readers to boycott the city.

A local civilian group, The Kanab Boosters, published an open letter asking Frommer to reconsider his boycott, making it clear that "only a small number of people agree with our city council on the Proclamation of Natural Family". Boosters also designed and provided stickers for residents and local business owners who opposed the resolution. The stickers featured a series of rainbow-colored figures under Kanab's red rocks and the words "Everyone is welcome here".

Responding to criticism of the resolution, the Sutherland Institute clarified, saying that the resolution says that children are well looked after when a mother is home in significant amount of time and that gay relations are not a natural family.

In 2008, Kanab city council voted to ban the use of bikinis in city swimming pools. The ban was lifted within a month.

Find Montezuma treasure

In 1914, Freddy Crystal arrived in Kanab and said that, while researching in Mexico, he had discovered that the great treasure of Montezuma, spewed by the kings before his death, could be found in the mountains around the city. Much of the quest and excavation by Crystal and those who followed it ended when the plan to drain the lake, with the belief that the treasure was living in an underwater cave, was stopped by the Government because it was one of several protections from Kanab ambernail.
