Development
Historical Developments
Before 1930
Some of the first home residents who settled in what is now the Glendale neighborhood are the family of George Q. Cannon. The George Q. and Caroline Cannon House are a Victorian-style brick house in 1354 South and 1000 West and built in 1876. There are maps, photography, property descriptions, and paintings documenting the development of this area. On May 31, 1896, Latter-day Saints Cannon was founded by members of the Cannon family, serving the area between 600 West to West, Redwood Road to the east, Indiana Avenue to the north, and 2700 South to the south.. On December 31, 1900, Ward Cannon contained 61 families consisting of 331 people, 81 of whom were children.
In the 1890s several industries were established near the northeast corner of what is now Glendale (950 S and 600 W), including brick making, brewery, biscuit factory, salt work, and soup factory. At the beginning of the 20th century, railroads split the city of Salt Lake City. Industries and trains work in a remote residential area on the west side of Salt Lake City. Isolation and proximity to industry led to residential areas being a working class environment. Before the 1930s, Salt Lake City was highly polluted, had misty air, and the Jordan River was used as a sewerage, making it a less desirable place to live nearby.
There are several houses on the east side of the Jordan River on California Avenue today that were built before 1930.
Between 1930 and 1960
Based on aerial photography, a large number of housing developments took place in the Glendale neighborhood from 1937 to 1958, which coincided with post-World War II expansion. The first major subdivisions built at Glendale were built in the 1940s and early 1950s. The initial subdivision is part of the Glendale Gardens housing project, built to accommodate the large influx of families moving to Utah for war effort, linked to the relocation of the Ninth Command Service to Fort Douglas, Utah.
The southern area of ââCalifornia Avenue, east 1200 West, and west of the Jordan River, was developed from 1947 to 1952. The northern areas of California Avenue and south of Glendale Drive are also developed today.
The main development in the western part of the industry, part of Glendale is the Utah Ordnance Plant. This area is operated by Remington Corporation. In 1941, several buildings were built within the Utah Ordnance Plant area for the purpose of producing World War II ammunition. Utah Ordnance Plant operates from 1942 to 1943 and standby from 1944 to 1946. This area was closed and sold after 1946.
Post 1960
The Glendale region continues to grow to its present status. Most of the apartment complexes were present built during this time. ISALT Lake County worked with the Utah Park division to establish the Jordan River Parkway during this time.

In 2010, Glendale has a population of 9962 people living in 2751 homes.
Post-2012 Developments
The earliest West Salt Lake City master plan outlines many improvements to the west side of Salt Lake City, including improvements to the area's entrance, enforcing property maintenance standards, improving bicycle access, and improving road performance in the neighborhood. Bordering the northern level of the Glendale neighborhood, the 9 Line Line is a new line network connecting West Salt Lake City to the rest of the city.
Demand for real estate in the Glendale area, in 2012 is above the average for the US, and may signal an increase in the value of the area.
