The Catholic Community Service is a service of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City. The goal is to serve the needs of the poor, the troubled and the oppressed, and help them solve life problems, and become self-reliant and healthy. It is a member of the National Catholic charity organization. Its main office is located at 745 E. 300 South Salt Lake City, Utah.

Histori

Catholic Community Services (CCS) was founded in 1945 when Most Rev. Duane G. Hunt of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City recognizes the need for organized effort to help the poor. He established a local branch of the Catholic Charity. A small office opened on the top floor of a red brick house next to Madeleine Cathedral. Msgr. Joseph P. Moreton, the first Executive Director, implemented various programs including: adoption, foster care, family counseling, additional assistance, and temporary assistance. Some important milestones that took place over sixty years of service were: Adoption began in 1945, poverty assistance, childcare, family counseling and temporary relief programs. 1951-Became a United Way agent. 1967-Open Stores Stores Vincent DePaul. Started Soup Kitchen to serve sandwiches to a 1982-Utah service that has no homes on offer in Ogden. 1996-New Bishop William K. Weigand Resource Center for the Homeless opened. Operation 2001-Northern Utah is officially designated as Food Bank

Program

CCS from Utah currently provides a comprehensive range of social services.

Maintenance service

  • St. Mary's Treatment Center for Men is a 39-bed residential treatment facility designed to restore men with drug or alcohol dependency problems to meaningful and productive participation in society.
  • Women's Care offers comprehensive outpatient abuses treatment for women. Dependent children also receive support while their mothers go to independence.

Immigrant and refugee settlements

  • Refugee Resettlement relocates hundreds of refugees who escape persecution each year. The program guides refugees to independence by providing medical assistance, seeking employment opportunities and finding housing for six months after arrival. CCS of Utah is an affiliate of the United States Catholic Bishops Conference, and the Office of Migration and Refugee Services.
  • The Immigration Program helps immigrants reunite with loved ones, find English classes, and help with naturalization documents.
  • Refugee Foster Care provides small unemployed refugees and trafficking victims with stable homes and helps them adapt to new life in the United States.

Basic service needs

Salt Lake City

  • Dining Room St. Vincent de Paul serves thousands of hearty and nutritious meals for people in need every week.
  • The Weigand Day center offers a safe place for homeless people to stay calm or warm during the day. Builders can also take hot showers, wash their clothes and get legal assistance among other services.
  • The CCS Emergency Assistance Program provides low-income individuals and families with the help of food, clothing, and utilities to help them work toward self-sufficiency.

Ogden

  • The Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank provides food for people in need and provides baskets to seniors and people with disabilities.
  • Homeless Prevention Services help low-income individuals and families make ends meet so they can keep their homes.
  • St. Martha's Baby Project equips low-income parents with baby babies.
