Description

The station is located in 180 West 1300 South (1300 South is the main east-west route through Salt Lake City and the station is easily accessible from that street). It is about half a block northwest of Smith's Ballpark, home to Salt Lake Bees. Two roads from 1300 South allow access to the station by vehicle and bus from the south side of the station. The sidewalks at 1300 South and Lucy Lane to the north allow pedestrian and bicycle access. There is direct access to the platform from the sidewalk on the north side of 1300 South. The 1300 southbound provides direct access to the main north-south artery roads - West Temple Street, Main Street and State Street (US 89) to the east and 300 West and Interstate 15/80 to the west. The station has plenty of Park and Ride with 170 free parking spaces available. There is also a dedicated parking space allocated to U Car Share, a car-guided company operating in Salt Lake City. The station opened on 4 December 1999 and is operated by the Transit Utah Authority.

All TRAX UTA and FrontRunner and station trains, as well as all fixed-route buses, are in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and are therefore accessible to persons with disabilities. Signage at stations, on passenger platforms, and on trains clearly indicates accessibility options. Walking on a passenger bed and assistance from a train operator may be required for wheelchairs in the Blue Line (weekdays only). This ramp is not used on weekends or on the Red or Green Line. In accordance with the Clean Air Act of Utah and UTA regulations, "smoking is prohibited on UTA vehicles as well as UTA bus stops, TRAX stations, and FrontRunner station ".

History

Ballpark is near the point where the Salt Lake and Utah interurban tram lines crosses the first major line built south from Salt Lake City (which is known by many names, but most closely related to Union Pacific Railroad). The TRAX trek north of the station follows the old Salt Lake and Utah routes, while the tracks in the south of the region follow the footsteps used by Union Pacific. The electrifying spur line seen on the north-west of the current station is a continuation north of the original Union Pacific main line; just a few trails of the continuation of the southern lines of Salt Lake and Utah (which head southwest to the RedTA UTA Crossing station before turning south) remain.

In 1997, while planning to rebuild the Sandy/Salt Lake lane, UTA had imagined that the area around the station would experience an urban renewal, with some older homes being renovated and a new multi-family life being built around the station. However, UTA property manager Richard Swenson admits that, "I do not think developers have captured that vision." This station is part of the original TRAX track (now Blue Line), which opened December 4, 1999. Students from the nearby Horizonte Training and Training Center painted a mural on the side of one of the businesses located along the west side of the station in 2000, which often became a target for graffiti artists. A Salt Lake City official stated that these murals help prevent graffiti because "... the gangs are for some reason respecting such works of art."

Parks and Ride filled many for capacity on most evenings during the 2002 Winter Olympics due to the use of TRAX and buses by residents and spectators. In 2003, Ballpark had the third highest automatic theft number from all TRAX stations, behind Historic Sandy and Sandy Civic Center. On 31 October 2006, governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. held a press conference at the station to support Proposition 3, which instituted a quarter-cent increase in state sales taxes in Salt Lake and Utah county. Proposition 3 includes funding for FrontRunner and, at that time, 33 unknown projects in Salt Lake County.

Services

The single island platform, capable of serving up to four trains, is located on the west side of the 3.2 acre (1.3 hectare) property. Two shelters are located on the platform covering a small seating area, with a picture of a former Salt Lake Bees player lining the inside of the canopy.

On August 18, 2009, U Car Share began providing car rental services with public pickup and dismissal at several different TRAX stations as well as the University of Utah campus. Three safe bike lockers are also located at the facility, but must be rented from UTA in advance at an annual cost. Three ticket machines are located on a platform that provides one trip, round trip, and all daily tickets, as well as family tickets and discounted tickets. The ticket engine is cash only and provides changes in dollar and quarterly coins only. The TRAX ticket machine is used to receive UTA rate tokens, which are still accepted on the bus. On September 1, 2008, UTA discontinued use of tokens on a TRAX machine due to increased fraud.
